It is with great honor to announce the exhibition of Peter Max’s new works, which will be shown at the Wynwood Art District from September 26th through November 2nd, 2013 as part of Art Basel Miami. The exhibition is entitled “Peter Max: A Look into the Mind of a Pop Artist” and will feature over 50 pieces of art, including paintings on canvas, drawings on paper and sculptures made out of bronze and resin.
The title for this body of work came about because Peter has been working on these images for over two years. This is not a one-man show like some artists have done in the past by just showing a few pieces but rather will consist of over 50 new works.
The collection shows various aspects of his life that he has enjoyed being part of such as being a “Pop Artist” and also through being an environmentalist and always thinking outside the box. Some subjects in this collection are: New York City, Las Vegas, Washington DC, Iowa State Fairground where he grew up in Des Moines, Iowa; Walt Disney World; Flower Power era in San Francisco; Baseball Hall of Fame; and many more.

Peter Max, the American artist and pop artist is a unique painter and graphic designer. The most distinctive features of his art are vibrant colors and elements of psychedelic art. A lot of his paintings contain references to the 1960s, a decade that was particularly important in his life.
Max’s artwork is not only popular among collectors but also among celebrities. His famous clients include Michael Jackson, David Bowie and Princess Diana. Moreover, he has created album covers for musicians such as Crosby Stills Nash and Young, George Harrison, John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
Peter Max (born 1929) is an American artist known for his optical art, a style of painting which uses vivid colors and often overlapping circular patterns. He came to prominence in the 1960s and continued through the 1970s as a symbolist painter of psychedelic pop art.
¶Max was born to a Jewish family in Berlin, Germany. He emigrated with his family to the United States in 1937. When he was 13 years old, his father placed him in New York’s Art Students League. He graduated from Brooklyn’s Erasmus Hall High School in 1945, then served in the U.S. Army from 1946-1947.
¶In 1954 he married artist Susan Kaufman and moved to Paris, France where he studied at the Academie Julian for six months. In 1955 he returned to New York where he started to work as an illustrator for magazines including American Heritage, Harper’s Bazaar, Seventeen, Collier’s Weekly, Cosmopolitan and others.[1]
Max was drafted into the U.S. Army again during the Korean War; he rose to the rank of corporal before receiving a medical discharge in 1953.[2]
Max had his first solo exhibition of paintings at Gallery HAGO in Kyoto Japan in 1958.[3]

Peter Max, born 19 June 1937 as Peter Max Finkelstein in Berlin, is an American artist known for using bright colors and psychedelic designs in his work. He has designed album covers, created stage sets and produced commercials. He is most famous for painting the colorful design on the side of a Boeing 747 aircraft that carried the Olympic torch in 1996.
Since 1978, Max has created over 40 album covers for such artists as Jefferson Starship, Alan Parsons Project and Three Dog Night. His 1970s paintings of rock stars, including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Rolling Stones and The Who are widely-known icons of pop culture from that era.
Max was born Peter Max Finkelstein to a Jewish family in Berlin. In 1938, one year before World War II broke out he immigrated with his parents to New York City at age 10 where his father worked as a tailor and his mother worked in a factory making artificial flowers. They were poor but he felt happy there; “We were like the Beverly Hillbillies.” He went to school in the Bronx where he attended art classes at the School of Industrial Art. Later he attended the High School of Music & Art and graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in 1954.
