Tribal art has always fascinated me ever since I was a child and I remember my father taking me to Cama museum in Mumbai where I had seen some Warli paintings there. Since then I have been interested in tribal arts from all over India but never really got around to studying them. And it is only recently when I decided to take up some project related to arts that I started looking at these arts more seriously. And it was after watching a documentary on Discovery channel called

“Warli” art is an ancient tradition of Indian tribal people. It is the oldest form of art in India and the only form of painting that has survived since ancient days. According to the locals, it was created by a mythical bird and their forbearers preserved the tradition for centuries.

This forms a valuable part of our history and culture and it is high time that it should receive its due recognition from all quarters. The increasing interest shown by the young generation in preserving this art form is indeed admirable.

The paintings are done on the walls of villages, rocks and also on leaves, bamboo sticks and sometimes on cloth which is then hung outside. The songs sung while painting these pictures are called “Warli Geete”. The words used in these songs are considered too sacred to be put into writing.

The art has been passed down word-of-mouth and there are no known written records about its origin or about who actually invented it.

It is believed that this art existed even before the arrival of Hinduism in India as this art depicts scenes from Hindu epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata along with other themes like birds, animals, flowers etc.”

Warli art is a form of tribal art practiced by the Warlis, a group of indigenous people in the Thane district of Maharashtra, India. It is believed to have evolved from the practice of creating rock paintings. These paintings were created on rocks and boulders in order to preserve them for posterity. The Warlis did not have any script or language and practiced oral traditions that communicated stories, events and directions for rituals.

The Warli paintings are considered as one of the forms of rock art in India along with the rock paintings done by other ancient civilizations in places such as Bhimbetka, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The rock paintings are related to prehistoric levels in human history because they are said to be created before the invention of writing or the use of iron tools.

The paintings are known for their depictions of scenes from everyday life like hunting, dancing, musical performances, etc., as well as abstract designs like zigzags and dots. They are also known for their three-dimensional quality, which gives them depth despite being painted on flat surfaces. In addition, they have been known for their ability to tell stories through their designs.

The Warli style of painting is inspired by the tribal people of India and is unique in its own mark. It has been around for many years and was first discovered by the British. The British were able to appreciate it at once and they kept it safe by preserving it. The Warli painting is a form of art. They are a major form of the art of the Warli tribe from the Indian state of Maharashtra. The paintings are found on walls, floors and sometimes on ceilings. According to the Warli folklore, their ancestors made these paintings in order to bring good luck and fortune as well as prosperity to themselves and their families.

The word Warli means “to decorate”, it comes from two words – “Vara” meaning body and “li” meaning colour or pigment.

The Warlis use natural pigments to create their paintings. The pigments include charcoal black, charcoal white, bone black, bone yellow, mud brown, mud red, and white clay. These pigments are mixed with water in order to make them into paints which can then be applied to different surfaces.

The paintings are usually created during festivals such as Navaratri or Diwali or Dussehra etc., but they can be made for any occasion. The paintings depict love, happiness, beauty and auspiciousness among other themes.

The history of art is as old as the history of human kind, in fact older. Art is a form of expression, which is used to communicate ideas and emotions.

Art has been used for entertainment and self-expression as well as religious and political purposes. In addition, art has also been used to express ideas that were forbidden by the government, political or religious authorities. The different types of Art includes paintings, sculptures, architecture, music etc…

From the prehistoric era to medieval age there are several forms of art. The earliest form was cave painting. It dates back to 10,000 BC and it consists of drawing on cave walls with soft colored pigments (e.g charcoal) made from minerals and plants.

The next most ancient form is Egyptian hieroglyphs (4th millennia BC). This form of art was used for writing down speeches and narrations or simply decoration on monuments and temples.

It was only in the 17th century that the word Art began to be commonly used by many people in Europe due to great development in painting style led by artists like Leonardo da Vinci or Michelangelo. Several other forms of art also appeared including sculpture, architecture, literature etc…

The history of art is the study of the objects made by humans in Western society, with an emphasis on material culture. The term encompasses a wide variety of fields in the humanities and social sciences, including archaeology, architecture, art history , cultural studies, ethnography , folkloristics , musicology , philology , and visual culture studies.

Art as an academic subject came into its own in the 19th century as a response to the increasingly visible divide between art and science. This division was in part due to the rise of empiricism and its challenge to fundamental elements of art-making: originality and creativity. In other words, art was being seen as less of a skill and more of an object that could be redone or replicated by anyone.

The birth of art history corresponds to the birth of modernism in the late-19th century. The argument for separating the two is that modernism rejected most forms of decoration; it wanted to focus on essentials rather than a sum total effect that included ornamentation. Art history was one means by which scholars could learn how to look at paintings and other forms of art with a critical eye.
