Benezra established SFMOMA’s first department dedicated to contemporary art and oversaw initial plans to build a new home for the museum.

The architect Peter Zumthor was selected in 2001 to design the museum’s new building.

Tours are offered Fridays 10:30 am–1 pm and Saturdays noon–2 pm.

SFMOMA’s collection is made up of more than 14,000 works of modern and contemporary art. That includes everything from painting and sculpture to photography, architecture, design, film and video. There are more than 500 artists included in the collection.

The museum also has a library and archives which include more than 70,000 volumes and over 900 periodical titles that are available to researchers by appointment.
