Why Art is Important

My blog is a way for me to share my thoughts, ideas and opinions about the art world.

I have been studying and working in this field for several years. I have a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of California, Davis, and have worked as an artist, an art consultant and an arts instructor.

I am based in Davis and work as a freelance artist and part-time gallery employee. My work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions around the state of California.

I collaborate with local artists on projects that are in line with my interests, including art education. I am also interested in issues related to the contemporary art market, such as copyright law, intellectual property rights, creative commons licensing and other aspects of digital media.

It is hard to say whether art is important or not. It seems to be something you either like or you don’t. So let me start with a definition. Art is something that creates an emotion, a feeling, in the viewer. Now if you think about it, what in your life has created that feeling? I will try to explain why art is important and maybe you will understand why I think it is important.

If you are going to give something an emotion or feeling, it needs to be true or at least have some elements of reality to it so the person looking at it feels like there is some truth in this work of art. It also needs to be beautiful or have some feeling that makes it beautiful. If you go into a museum and look at a lot of different paintings, sculptures and other types of art, you will see that this is true.

This blog will have writing and pictures regarding my thoughts on art and its importance in the world today as well as how it affects us for the better or for the worse. I hope after reading this blog that you will appreciate the importance of art in our lives and why it should be appreciated a little more instead of being taken for granted.

I am going to attempt to tell you why it is important, as an individual and all of society, to appreciate art.

My name is Christopher T. Chiaverina, and I’m a Graphic Designer and Artist with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design & Art History. I’ve worked for many years as an art director at a high-end commercial art studio, which has allowed me to work on a variety of clients and projects while also creating my own personal artwork.

I have been interested in art since I can remember, and studied the subject during my undergraduate career at San Jose State University. I obtained my degree in Graphic Design & Art History with an emphasis in Illustration & Animation. Since then, I have worked in the field of advertising as an art director at the well-known design firm, G2 Inc., located in San Jose, CA.

I am currently living in San Jose, CA with my wife and our two cats. On this blog you will find everything from art tutorials to photography to random posts about life as an artist. Enjoy!**

I’m not an expert in art, and most of the time I try to avoid talking about it, but I have made a number of paintings over the years, and my blog has now become a repository for some of those works.

Sometimes I find that I need to explain the process of making something that I’ve created, like a drawing or a painting, just so that people can understand what went into it. Other times, I find myself explaining something about modern society or culture that I feel passionate about because I believe that art gets us there faster than anything else.

How do you define art? Well, it’s hard to say exactly how you would define something like “art” or “beauty” but you know it when you see it. It’s different from just any old thing out there. The colors and shapes are arranged differently. It doesn’t look like reality. And if you look at it long enough, you start to wonder what is real?

I’ll be the first to admit that this stuff is all pretty subjective and probably not worth much of your time, but maybe one day when you’re bored and looking for something strange to read about online, you’ll give my blog a try…

Thank you for stopping by my blog. I am an artist with a background in philosophy, art history, and education. My goal is to create stimulating conversation on the many facets of art from the perspective of a practicing artist and educator.

This blog is intended to cover all things related to art. This includes, but is not limited to, art as an investment or commodity, the commodification of art, contemporary art and its critics and controversies, the issues surrounding private collections, art as a business, intellectual property in the visual arts, historic preservation in relation to modern architecture and urban planning, public funding of the arts, the arts in education, cultural policy and planning in general…and anything else that you might think about when deciding whether to spend four hours making a collage and then spending $800 framing it.

I am interested in hearing about your experiences as an artist (whether you are working professionally or as an amateur), your experiences with art institutions (galleries/museums), or your thoughts on any of the above topics. Please contact me at: peter@art-street.com .

Art is important because it gives us a way to talk about ourselves even when we don’t know what to say. Art is important because it gives us a way to see the world around us even when we can’t see at all. Art is important because it can give beauty a place to live in the world, even when nothing else can.

Art is important because it allows us to hold something up and say, “this is what I mean,” and that’s important, too.
