The name zentangle comes from the words Zen and Tangles, which are a combination of two artistic elements: zen (a school of Mahayana Buddhism) and tangles (doodling done to relax).

The way that I became interested in Zentangle was when my husband (who is an artist) took me to the Creative Arts Center in Austin, Texas where he had heard about a class in Zentangle taught by Maria Thomas, who had originally learned the method from Rick Roberts, who I believe was one of the original teachers of the Zentangle Method created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas out of necessity for their own personal artistic growth. Rick Roberts and his wife and business partner are self-taught fine artists who developed this method as a means to help themselves grow as artists and because they wanted to teach others how to improve their artistic skills as well.
