The name zentangle comes from the words Zen and Tangles, which are a combination of two artistic elements: zen (a school of Mahayana Buddhism) and tangles (doodling done to relax).
Zentangle art can be done on many surfaces, including paper, tiles, fabric, wood, glass, mirrors and even smooth rocks outdoors. There are two ways to draw zentangle art: structured patterns and freestyle patterns. A structured pattern has specific rules to follow while creating the pattern: no lifting your pen or pencil while drawing a line; use only one shade; do not retrace any lines; etc… A freestyle pattern does not have any specific rules except for drawing one continuous line without lifting your

Tangles are used to create patterns and designs for Zentangle art. There are an infinite number of tangles to use, but some of the most common ones include circles, squares, lines, and dots.*”

Zentangle is a simple, really relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images using black ink only. The basic Zentangle tile is made up of two simple patterns, the Tangles and the Backgrounds. The tangles are the fun part. They can be any combination of lines, curves and/or dots. The backgrounds are more structured, but still can contain a bit of randomness.*
Zentangle is a simple, easy to learn, relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. Zentangle is easy enough for anyone to do.
Zentangle is not a coloring book or a paint-by-numbers project. Instead, it is a creative process that involves drawing structured patterns. The patterns are based on a combination of geometric shapes and traditional tangle patterns that date back hundreds of years.
Tangles are drawn one at a time by following specific directions. Some tangles have more than one step in the process. In these cases it’s helpful to use an image of the pattern as you draw it to make sure you have it right before you move on to the next step.
The key benefit of the Zentangle method is that you are creating your own unique piece of art each time you draw, which has the potential to become a valuable family heirloom.
The Zentangle Method: What It Is and How To Do It**
Zentangle is a method of creating beautiful art. It is easy to learn, relaxing and fun. You can create something wonderful for yourself or as a gift for someone else.
Zentangle is a trademarked process and name of Zentangle, Inc., which has developed the Zentangle method of creating beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.
Zentangle is a method of creating original works of art. The word “Zentangle” consists of the words “Zen” and “Tangle”. While both Zen and Tangling have been practiced for centuries, Zentangle was developed in the 1990s by two people: Rick Roberts, an American living in Florida, and Maria Thomas, who was born in South Africa and moved to the US.
Each person creates their own original artwork using structured patterns called tangles. There are over 2000 tangles that are used in Zentangle art, which is created using only black fine-line markers on white paper. No pencils or erasers are allowed.
The structured patterns are designed to be relaxing and to reduce stress while tangling. The patterns force artists to focus on each step of the process without worrying about the overall design. Artists often report that they feel more alert after creating a Zent
Zentangle is a meditative art form that anyone can do. It’s a fun, easy, and relaxing way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns.
Zentangle is not a drawing. Zentangle is not a type of art. Zentangle is not an art form. Instead, it’s a process that you can use to make any kind of art. It helps you tap into your creative flow and become more confident as an artist.
The way that I became interested in Zentangle was when my husband (who is an artist) took me to the Creative Arts Center in Austin, Texas where he had heard about a class in Zentangle taught by Maria Thomas, who had originally learned the method from Rick Roberts, who I believe was one of the original teachers of the Zentangle Method created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas out of necessity for their own personal artistic growth. Rick Roberts and his wife and business partner are self-taught fine artists who developed this method as a means to help themselves grow as artists and because they wanted to teach others how to improve their artistic skills as well.
*As a side note: These two people are exceptionally talented artists in their own right and it would be worth visiting their websites/blogs
Zentangle is a drawing tool and art form and approach to life, all rolled into one. As an art form, it is very enjoyable to create with and even more relaxing to view. As an approach to life, it encourages people to look at the world in new ways and to discover the artist within themselves.
