Art Deco is an architectural style that originated in France, and then spread to the United States and many other countries. Art Deco flourished during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.

Art Deco buildings are noted for their elegance and glamour, as well as their often extravagant use of materials such as steel, stone, glass, and ceramics. Art Deco is still widely admired today.

Art Deco buildings are said to have been inspired by ancient Egyptian architecture. The name “Art Deco” comes from a 1925 Paris Exhibition known as “Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts.”

We will take a look at the different aspects of Art Deco architecture in this blog.

Sculptures: Sculptures were very popular with the Egyptian style that was seen all throughout Art Deco architecture. Sculptures were usually human figures or animals but they could be anything that was used to decorate the building. One example of an Art Deco sculpture is the one on top of The New Yorker hotel in New York City. It is an Egyptian style pyramid which represents power and wealth.

Empire State Building, New York City: The Empire State Building was completed in 1931 and is one of the most famous Art Deco buildings. It was built as a new head office for the Empire State Corporation by noted architect William F. Lamb. This building has an interesting history – it was almost never built because of a terrible depression at the time, but was eventually finished due to public demand!

Art Deco cinemas: there are many art deco cinemas around Australia, such as the Regent Cinema in Coogee and the Classic Cinema in Bondi. There are also some fine examples in America, such as the United Artists Theater (now called Senator Theater) in Baltimore and Detroit’s Majestic Theater.

It is named for the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, which took place from April to October 1925 in Paris. The term “Art Deco” was applied to the style as early as September 1925, when the term “Style Moderne” appeared in a Swiss publication, and again on 18 February 1926, when it appeared in Vogue magazine.

The style featured lavish, fantasy-like buildings with lots of curves, especially on windows and screens, and was used mostly in the interiors of buildings. Dazzling use of color, exotic materials, non-rectilinear shapes and lighting effects were used not only as surface decoration but also structurally. Sometimes such buildings no longer looked like buildings at all but like objects or sculpture.
