When is it touch-dry, when can you paint over it, and when is it safe to varnish — the last of which you only get one chance at

Most earth colours, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, ultramarine, viridian, the iron oxides. The baseline everything else here is measured against.

Oil dries by absorbing oxygen, so moving air matters as much as warmth. A canvas left facing a wall has almost none.

Oil paint does not dry. It cures.

Watercolour and acrylic dry by evaporation — water leaves, and what is left behind is the paint. Oil does something completely different. The oil absorbs oxygen from the air and cross-links into a solid film, which is a chemical reaction rather than a physical one, and it has consequences that surprise people who expect paint to behave like paint.

The first is that touch-dry is not cured. The film meets the air at its surface, so that is where curing starts, and the skin that forms then slows the oxygen reaching the paint beneath it. A passage can be firm to the fingertip in days and still be soft underneath for months. It is also why thick paint cracks: a set skin that cannot move sits over a film that is still moving.

The second is that temperature and air matter, in the way they matter to any reaction. A warm, ventilated studio runs meaningfully faster than a cold, still one. A canvas stood facing a wall has almost no air movement at all.

The third is that pigment is a catalyst, not only a colour. Umber, cobalt and lead white carry metals that actively drive the oxidation — which is exactly why umber was the traditional underpainting colour. Titanium white, ivory black, the cadmiums and alizarin crimson are the opposite, and whites are usually bound in slow poppy or safflower oil on top of that. A slow pigment in a slow oil, in the colour you used most of.

Why the last one is different

Varnish is meant to be sacrificial. It takes the dirt, the light and the handling so the paint does not, and a conservator removes and replaces it when it has done its job. Applied over a film that is still soft, it sinks in and bonds, and that removal becomes impossible without taking paint away too. You will have permanently fixed a protective layer to the thing it was supposed to protect, and no amount of care afterwards undoes it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before I can varnish an oil painting?

The traditional answer is six months, and it is a reasonable default for an ordinary painting in ordinary conditions — but it can be a month for a thin alkyd glaze and well over a year for heavy impasto in slow pigments. What matters is not the calendar but whether the film has cured all the way through, and the thickest passage governs the whole painting. Press a thumbnail firmly into it: if it dents or feels rubbery, wait.

What actually goes wrong if I varnish too early?

Varnish exists to be removable. It takes the dirt and the damage so the paint underneath does not, and a conservator lifts it off decades later and replaces it. Applied over a soft, uncured film, the varnish sinks in and bonds with the paint, and that removal is no longer possible without taking paint with it — you have permanently attached a sacrificial layer to the thing it was meant to protect. Trapped solvent can also cloud the surface or contribute to cracking. It is the one mistake in this whole process you cannot undo.

Why is my painting dry everywhere except the whites?

Because pigment is not just colour, it is a catalyst. Umbers, cobalt and lead white contain metals that actively accelerate oxidation — umber was traditionally used for underpainting precisely because it dries so fast. Titanium and zinc white, ivory black, the cadmiums and alizarin crimson do the opposite. Worse, whites are usually bound in safflower or poppy oil rather than linseed, because those oils yellow less, and they are also the slowest to dry. Is touch-dry the same as dry?

No, and the gap between them is the source of most of the damage. Oil paint cures from the surface inward: the layer meeting the air oxidises first and forms a skin, and that skin then slows the oxygen reaching everything beneath it. A passage can be firm to the fingertip within days and remain a soft film underneath for months. This is also why thick paint cracks — a set skin that cannot move sits over a film that is still shifting.

Does a hair dryer or a warm room help?

Warmth and moving air genuinely help, because oxidation is a chemical reaction fed by oxygen. A warm, ventilated room can cut the schedule by around a quarter against a cold, still one, and a canvas left facing a wall is getting almost no air at all. What does not help is direct heat on a thick film, which sets the surface faster while the interior is unchanged — exactly the condition that causes cracking. Gentle and general beats hot and local.

What is retouch varnish, and when can I use it?

A retouch varnish is a thin, dilute, permeable coat. It evens out the dull sunken patches that appear as oil sinks into the ground, so a painting can be photographed or exhibited long before it is ready for a final varnish. Because it is thin and porous it still lets the paint underneath breathe and continue curing, and a conservator can remove it later. Use it when you need the painting to look finished; it is not a substitute for the final varnish, which still waits.
