I am a freelance graphic designer and calligrapher based in Perth, Western Australia. I have over 3 years of experience in creating hand-lettered designs for print, web and packaging design. My studio is my home office where I create all my designs and lettering. My goal is to inspire you with a passion for typography, so that you can make your own work stand out from the crowd. I love being able to help other creatives grow their businesses through design and branding.

I teach workshops in calligraphy and give talks on the subject at various community events.

There are two levels of calligraphy. The biggies are the art of calligraphy and the craft of calligraphy. Calligraphy as an art refers to the style or type of lettering used. Calligraphy as a craft refers to how those letters are made.

Calligraphy as a craft is a lot more to do with the tools than it is about the actual lettering itself. A beginner’s guide to calligraphy would instruct you on choosing pen nibs, how to hold them correctly, how to make strokes, what direction you need to go in, etc. Tools are important! Knowing your tools can help you avoid making mistakes and have better control over your lettering.

Briefly, let’s break down the types of calligraphy into styles and then we’ll look at some examples of each kind:

1) Uncial – This is an example of a style of Roman Capitals that has been around since the 4th Century AD! It’s familiar look is due to its origins in book-hand. Basically it’s all curves and loops, very loose and easy going. Kinda like someone who just got out of bed (it was a late one).

2) Carolingian – This is another

Typography is a form of visual communication that uses written language. Typography also includes the style, arrangement and appearance of the typeface or glyphs (letters, numbers and other symbols) used. The word “typography” was coined in 1796 by William Ged, a London printer and publisher, who used the word to refer to the arrangement of printed matter.

Taken as a whole, typography may be regarded as a distinct branch of art and design; but type design is sometimes considered as part of typography, and typefaces are commonly referred to as fonts. When it comes to calligraphy art, however, it is not just about learning how to write beautifully with a pen on paper; you must also learn how to arrange words with elegance on your page.

Typography is a very important part of graphic design.

As a designer, you need to take great care when writing texts for your projects and also while designing text related graphics, such as logos and banners.

You need to make sure that the font you use is legible, easy to read and that it has been optimized for use in different mediums such as on screen, on paper or even from a distance (such as on a billboard).

A good tip is to always choose fonts that are easily readable without too much effort: never use decorative fonts for body text. Try to keep the number of font families minimal. This will give any project harmony and make it easier to read.

Don’t forget that typography must be consistent throughout your all designs. This means that if you are using one font family, you need to stick with it throughout your website or brochure.

Typography is the visual art of verbal communication and representation, in which the composition of type involves both text and image together, as well as the physical texture of the letterforms.

Typography is also a digital art form, sometimes referred to as font design. It is a fundamental element of graphic design, used to convey organization, meaning and emotion in printed media. Typography has been defined as “the art and technique of arranging type to make written language most attractive and most readable.”

Calligraphy is an artistic method of hand-lettering using a variety of tools and techniques. It has been practiced for thousands of years, in cultures all over the world. Although calligraphy can be created by hand with a pen or brush, it may also be produced by machine. A person who creates calligraphy is called a calligrapher, and is known as “The Calligrapher.”

T-shirts and posters with handwritten quotes are also popular items that contain calligraphy. The use of handwriting or script (as opposed to printed type) can be seen in many logos or company mottos and slogans.

Directly on the skin, tattoos which have lettering written in cursive are growing in popularity. Due to the nature of the design, the tattoo remains legible even after having faded slightly due to the body’s natural healing process.

There are many resources available to help learn and improve one’s calligraphy skills. Books, online tutorials and classes, videos, clubs and groups are all available for those who want to learn this beautiful skill. Hand lettering is also commonly used for small decorative signs such as for wedding invitations or greeting cards, though one does not need any formal training to do so.

As

We use typography every day. We communicate by it, and we consume by it. It’s a part of our lives, but very few of us actually understand the mechanics of type.

The web is an incredible medium. The opportunities it presents are endless and can be used to develop any kind of brand. Because of this, you have to make sure that your website design has personality, character, and clarity. These are three very important factors when creating a website that people will remember:

– Personality: You must have a unique design that is colorful, bold and exciting enough to stand out against all the rest. Your site must feature relevant information that reflects your business or personal identity. Your site design should be simple, clear, and easy to navigate through.

– Character: Before choosing a layout for your website, you should decide whether you want to go using a template layout or whether you want something original that can really set your site apart from everyone else’s. A template is a pre-designed layout which gives you the freedom to customize the content without having to worry about the design aspect. Most templates are created in Photoshop or Fireworks but there are many sites on the web where you can find free templates with different designs like cartoon themes, elegant layouts or plain
