It was in this kind of environment that [Sam] Francis would develop his unique style. He was a great colorist and a master of composition, but he was also a brilliant improviser who found his own way to use the materials at hand. For example, when he was on a trip to Rio de Janeiro, he had an epiphany while viewing the work of [Diego] Rivera. Francis saw how Mexican fresco painters mixed tempera and other pigments with wet plaster and were able to create vibrant colors. This made him reflect on how he could do something similar with paint. From then on, he often used house paints in his paintings, which eventually led to the hot, bright appearance of his canvases.
