The Great Wall is a series of stone and earthen fortifications in northern China, built originally to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire against intrusions by various nomadic groups. The majority of the existing wall was built in the 14th century, during the Ming Dynasty, although portions of it have been rebuilt and maintained since then. The Great Wall stretches from Shanhaiguan in the east, to Lop Lake in the west, along an arc that roughly delineates the southern edge of Inner Mongolia. One of the oldest structures in existence, some portions date back to the 5th century BC; although much of the wall has been eroded away as a result of natural weathering.

The Great Wall measures 3,921 miles (6,356 km) from end to end; however, its length continues to be a subject of controversy. In 2006 M.I.T. professor Peter C. Perdue said that this measurement is “more accurate and reliable” than other measurements previously made because it includes both sign posts
