If you’re new in the art game, it can be hard to get started. You don’t know how to get your first commissions, or how to price your work. But there are some simple things you can do to help yourself out. With just a little bit of forethought, you can make a much more successful start than most.
1. Figure Out What People Want
The most important thing when you’re starting out as an artist is to figure out what people want — and then give that to them. It doesn’t matter whether you are a painter, an illustrator, or a sculptor; all that matters is what people want now.
2. Don’t Do Something You Already Know How To Do
If you have been drawing for twenty years and then decide you want to try painting, don’t paint like your drawings look! The reason is simple: people already know how your drawings look; they don’t know how your paintings look. So if you make paintings like your drawings, no one will buy them because the market has already decided that it doesn’t want that style of painting from you.

When you are starting out (or even if you are eating at an expensive restaurant) it is always useful to keep in mind that it is very easy to screw up. To look at this more closely let’s pretend we are trying to get into the art world and make a living doing art.
Where do you start? How do you get your foot in the door? How do you know who the right people are that can help you? How do you get someone to commission you to paint their portrait or buy your painting? These are all important questions, but before we answer them let’s first just remember that there is a very simple solution to all of this. Get started! The first step is always the most difficult and by far the most important.
The trick here is just not to focus on making mistakes. If we focus on what might go wrong then we may never even begin. The great thing about getting started is that once we do we will have something to work with and then we can learn from our mistakes as we go! The truth is no one makes any money or gets anywhere in art without making a lot of mistakes, but that isn’t the point. The point is to keep moving forward and don’t worry so much about things not working out,
When you’re starting out, it’s easy to get intimidated by everything you need to learn. But in reality, a lot of the things you’re going to want to do are things that are pretty elementary. The basics are where you should focus your efforts—things like how to draw hands and feet, or how to draw facial expressions. I would recommend looking at the art of someone whose style is fairly different from yours and try copying some of their drawings. If you can’t find anyone whose style is different enough from yours, just look up some tutorials on YouTube or something. It’s important that you start getting used to drawing from observation because if you keep drawing from imagination, you’ll never improve as an artist.
Art is a tricky thing. Even if you understand it, you may still be unable to express what you want. But even if you can’t express it, there are ways to get it anyway, and I’ll tell you how.
The first thing you have to do is change your concept of art. Too often people think that art has to have something to do with “artistic talent.” That’s like thinking math has something to do with “math ability.” You can learn math, and so can everyone else; certain people have math talent and some don’t, but it’s not necessary. And because mathematics is not hard for everyone, in fact most people find it easy, they assume that anyone could learn it easily.
That is not true of art, unfortunately. Art is hard for most people, just as math would be hard for most people if they tried to learn it now instead of in high school. But just because art isn’t easy doesn’t mean that anyone can’t learn it. In fact I’ve learned the basics of several different styles of art in the past month by taking classes at OpenITP.**

So why would you want to work at home? If you’re the kind of person who likes to be around people, who loves the energy of a group effort, and who thrives on collaboration and brainstorming, working at home won’t be your cup of tea. But if you’re more introverted, more self-motivated, or simply looking to make some extra money on the side, then it might be perfect for you.
It takes time to build up a body of work; don’t expect to make a living from your art right away. Also, remember that you’ll probably have to give away some of your games for free; not all of them will pay off. But even developing one successful game can mean big bucks for you.
