The word “rangoli” means “coloured ground”. In Tamil it is called “kolam”, in Hindi it is called “matthi” or “chita”, in Odiya, the language of Odisha state it is called “kosali pati” and in Kannada it is called “Kolige”. The most common forms of rangoli are geometric patterns, floral designs and figures of gods and goddesses.
The basic principle behind making rangolis is simple – draw a design on the floor using wet rice powder, sprinkle dry rice powder over it and then gently brush off the excess powder with a feather or a soft broom/bristle.
