Drawing is one of those hobbies that has merit because it has a dual benefit. Not only do you get to learn something new, but it will help you relax as well. The first thing to learn about drawing is how to hold the pencil or pen correctly. Learn how to use a pencil properly before trying to draw with it. Hold it in a relaxed manner, so that you can keep your hand from cramping up or shaking as you draw. You may want to consider investing in an eraser if you intend on making mistakes often, because erasing is necessary when working on projects that require many revisions like comics and graphic novel pages do.

I am not a fan of modern art and I am not sure that it is possible to be a fan of modern art. But I have made one exception: the work of Edward Gorey.

Gorey was an American illustrator in the mid 20th century who is best known for his illustrated books. His work is so distinctive and immediately recognizable that he has inspired several imitators, even after his death in 2000.

One of the reasons why I like Gorey’s drawings is because they are so simple, yet they convey an incredible amount of personality and reality. They almost look like photographs, except they aren’t.

Gorey’s drawing style is so distinctive and easily identifiable that it can be a great tool when learning how to draw if you want to practice your line-work or shading technique. I’ll show you some examples of how I use Gorey’s drawings as inspiration for my own drawing practice in this article.

I think the best way to learn how to draw is just to draw. Don’t read any books, don’t watch any videos, don’t listen to any podcasts. Just pick up a pen or pencil and start drawing. The best way to learn how to draw is to practice drawing.

The second best way is to look at stuff and try to figure out why it looks the way it does and how you might be able to duplicate its appearance on paper.

Drawing is a complex process and a lot of people think that they can’t draw. This is because they don’t know how to learn how to draw. They have never been shown what they are doing wrong, so they don’t realize that they are doing anything wrong.
