If you’ve ever tried to write a book, you know that the hardest part is coming up with a great title.

The job of a book’s cover design is to entice readers and keep them reading. This means it needs to be eye-catching, easy to read and understandable from a distance. A good cover should not only tell people what the story is about, but also give them an idea of the tone and style of your writing.

Making your own cover art doesn’t have to require any special skills or software other than what’s already on your computer. All you need is a little time — and some inspiration! Here’s how to do it in 3 easy steps:

1. Pick your font style.

Fonts are made up of letters and characters that are designed to look a certain way. Some fonts have curvy lines, others have sharp edges, yet others look like they were written with old-fashioned typewriters. Know what style you want before you begin designing so that you can find the right font for your book’s title and type the words in correctly from the start.

For some reason, the first thing we do when we enter a bookstore is browse the book covers. Before we even read the back cover blurb, before we’ve even flipped open to the first page, we form an opinion about whether this is a book worth our time.

Telling your story through your book cover design means using a powerful tool to attract readers and introduce them to you and your story. This blog will walk you through how to create a great cover for your book in three easy steps:

First you have to figure out what your book cover is going to look like. There are three easy steps to do this.

First, you will need to decide what the general theme of your book will be and the kind of mood you want it to have. You can choose a genre, a time period, a color scheme, etc.

This is important because it will help you decide what all the elements on your book cover should be. For example, if you choose a modern setting and a neutral color scheme (like black and white), then try to include objects on the cover that can easily blend in with those colors. So instead of having a background that’s mostly green with some blue and yellow spots, try finding one that has mostly gray with some red and black spots.

Second, you’ll need to figure out what each element on your book cover will look like, so you know what size they should be, how much space they should take up on the page, etc. It’s easiest if you use actual measurements for this (in inches), but if not then estimate as best as possible so that everything fits together nicely in the end.

There are several ways to get a cover made.

The first is to hire a designer. I recommend this route, but it can be cost prohibitive for some. The second is to make the cover yourself, using Photoshop or Gimp. This is certainly possible, but requires some knowledge of design and layout. The third option is to use a tool like Story Shop that allows you to create a cover without any graphic design skills whatsoever.

Of course, if you don’t like any of the resulting covers or want something in color instead of black & white, you’ll still have to hire someone or learn graphic design skills of your own!

Stefan Sagmeister’s book, “Things I Have Learned in My Life So Far,” is a perfect example of why you should never judge a book by its cover. While the cover, at first glance, may appear to be quite boring and uninspiring, the content is provocative and fascinating.

Toward the end of the book, Sagmeister includes a section called “Things I have learned in my life so far that I think might be useful to other people.” The list includes advice such as “get over yourself” and “learn to take rejection.”

These are simple ideas that we’ve all heard before, but they’re presented in an entirely unique way. In fact they’re so unique that they’re now emblazoned on t-shirts sold at his website.

So how did this happen? How did these simple ideas get turned into a bestselling product? It all started with a book cover design.

There’s a big difference between the way readers and book buyers look at your cover. Readers want to know what they’re in for; book buyers are looking for a good investment.

Trying to create a single, beautiful design that both groups will love is like trying to please everyone all the time–it’s just not possible.

Some of the decisions you make when creating a book cover are based on what will appeal to readers, and some on what will appeal to book buyers. In an ideal world, you’d choose a design that accomplishes both goals but in practice, you have to prioritize.
