Natural Gardening for Birds
Natural gardening and birdwatching are complementary activities. When you create a natural, native habitat in your garden or yard, you attract birds who, in turn, will help you identify all the other native plants and critters that live there. This is how to attract birds: 1) Create a native habitat 2) Plant native plants that attract birds 3) Add water 4) Provide shelter
Birds are drawn to native plants because they are the best food source available in the area. Native plants have evolved over thousands of years to produce abundant seeds and fruits at times when there are enough birds around to disperse them. By planting natives, you help feed the birds who will feed you!

The best time to plant is in the fall and winter months when birds are migrating and looking for food, shelter and a place to spend the night. In fact, many people go so far as to plant only natives for their gardens. For example, if you want to attract cardinals, plant dogwoods and red maples. Cardinals are attracted to trees with red and orange berries or seeds. You’ll also want holly, hawthorns, wild cherry tree and serviceberry trees.
For some reason, most birds are attracted to the color yellow and will readily come if you have sunflowers growing nearby. Birds also like black-eyed Susan’s, butterfly weed and coreopsis flowers.
It’s important to remember that not all birds eat seeds; some eat insects or spiders instead. So if you want to attract hummingbirds or orioles to your garden, consider planting flowers they will enjoy as well such as bee balm
The most interesting part of this book is the history and evolution of birds, their feathers, beaks, legs, and all. The author also delves into the reasons why different birds have different colors. For instance, why do some birds, such as robins and blue jays, have blue feathers? And then there is the mystery of the hummingbird’s wings. How can they flap so fast and yet remain in flight?
The book also explores other aspects of bird behavior. How do birds build nests? What do birds eat? Do some birds hunt for their food? If so, how? Which birds are dangerous to humans? And which ones are helpful in a garden setting?
There is an excellent section on how to attract more birds to your garden or backyard. This book will teach you how to choose the right plants for your area and how to plant them. I definitely recommend this book if you want to attract more birds to your yard.”
