The National Gallery of Modern Art is India’s premier art institution and one of the most important art museums in Asia. It was established in 1954 and is located on the corner of M. G. Road and Irwin Road, New Delhi, India. The museum has a collection of more than 8000 works and aims to promote modern and contemporary Indian art as well as introduce foreign visitors to Indian culture through its collection.
Till 1994, the museum was known as the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA). However, in an effort to include more artists from India’s past the name was changed to NGMA (Nehru Memorial Museum) plus ‘Old Masters’. In 2007, this was again changed to NGMA plus ‘Contemporary’.
The museum also houses a library which contains over 20,000 books on modern art and culture.
The idea for the creation of a National Gallery came from Jawaharlal Nehru who felt that it would be appropriate to have a place that would exhibit modern Indian artworks since there wasn’t much exposure outside of India at that time.
The gallery itself opened in 1954 but didn’t have any permanent structure till 1958 which had been designed by architect Edward Albert Gibbs after winning an international competition for the design.

The NGMA building itself was designed by Cecil Balmond, who is based in London; it was inaugurated in 1998 by the then-President of India, K. R. Narayanan. It’s built out of steel and glass and has an impressive collection, including some works by well-known Indian artists like F N Souza and M F Husain as well as international ones like Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon and Vincent van Gogh.
