There are several kinds of framing options available. You can go to your local frame shop and have them cut glass for you, or you can spend some time on the internet looking for a custom frame. The advantage of having a local store cut your glass for you is that they will be able to fit it with little fuss. However, if you want something more decorative or a special size, then you will need to get it custom made.

Twelve years ago, I found myself in need of a new frame for a high school graduation photo of my daughter. She had taken her own picture in the photo lab and brought it home for me to frame for her. I recently had some pictures reframed. I was a little surprised at how complicated this seemingly simple process turned out to be:

1. The framing store had a nice selection of frames and mats, but they were all standard sizes (4×6, 5×7, 8×10). I wanted a couple of the pictures to have unusual dimensions.

2. The store had a huge selection of glass choices–solid, beveled, or with one of several kinds of decorative treatments like “gold leaf.” But they only had two choices for backing boards: standard white mat board or black velour board. I wanted a different kind of backing.

3. The store offered hundreds of choices for mats–different colors and materials–but they didn’t seem to have anything available in the size I needed for one picture.

4. The store had lots of pretty picture corners, decorative edge moldings that you put on the outside edges of the matted picture to finish it off–again in dozens of choices for color and material–but nothing that matched what I wanted for my pictures.

5. When I asked about mounting my pictures on foam core instead of having them framed with glass, the salesperson seemed very confused about what I was asking for.

A mat (or mount) is an additional piece of material that goes on the outside of your print to create a finished look for your framed print. Mats tend to come in neutral colors like white or black, but can also be made from wood or other materials. A mat is necessary if you want to add glass to your frame so that it will be safe for display.

Matting comes in different widths and depths. The width refers to how wide the mat is while the depth refers to how thick it is. The mattes we sell are 3/32″ (2mm) thick, but they also come in 5/16″ (8mm) thicknesses and 1/4″ (6mm) thicknesses.

Matting can also be used as a border around the image itself. Double matting adds another layer of matting around your image. This helps protect it by providing another layer of backing material, as well as adding some color contrast and visual interest when you look at it.
