If you’ve followed my work for some years you’ve probably noticed that it has improved dramatically. Watercolor painting is the art of using water-soluble pigments to color a surface, typically paper or a canvas. Watercolor refers to both the medium and the resulting artwork, which is called a watercolor.

The term watercolor applies to both the wet media (watercolor paint) and the dry media (paper, etc.). Watercolors involve adding pigment to water in a liquid form, but are usually applied to paper or another support (e.g., cardboard or wood), as ‘wet in wet’. A related technique is aquarelle, which involves combining water with pigment held in suspension; this approach also uses many of the same colors and techniques as are used in making watercolors. There has been a long history of combining these techniques with others such as gouache painting.

Water colors remain popular because they can be made easily and they often have subtle colors and interesting variations in intensity. Some pigments dissolve in the water, so artists use a variety of tools to apply paint—from sponges and rags to brushes and airbrushes. Many artists use a combination of different forms of application.[1]
