The Museum of Modern Art in New York is one of the most famous museums of art in the world and has a rich history: it was founded in 1929 as a museum to promote modern art and artists without favoritism, without discrimination. The official website is available at http://www.moma.org/moma_today/about_moma/index.html but this site is not the official website, it’s my personal one: I am an employee of the museum but with this blog I just want to talk about the MOMA, about its exhibitions, about its activities… I hope you will enjoy it and feel free to leave your comments!
The museum opened in 1929, almost as soon as the Museum of Modern Art, and its permanent collection features some of the most important works of the 20th century.

The Museum of Modern Art was founded in 1929 by a group of American artists, critics, and patrons as an alternative to the conservative, official institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The founders intended their museum to be a forum for contemporary and modern art.
THe museum’s collection has been expanded by numerous donations and purchases, with each new addition reflecting a certain taste at the time. For example, the gift of Paul Gauguin’s painting “Self-portrait” in 1898 marked the beginning of European modern art collection. The first donation from an American collector came in 1928 when Albert C. Barnes gave his collection of French Impressionist paintings to the museum.
The museum continued its policy of collecting only contemporary works until 1951, when it acquired Vincent van Gogh’s painting “Café Terrace at Night”, which had been left to the museum in the artist’s will. In 1955, the museum began acquiring historical artifacts from past cultures as a means of fostering an appreciation for world culture and providing visitors to the museum with an understanding of visual art that extended beyond modernism.

The permanent collection contains almost 21,000 paintings, sculptures and works on paper; over 2,000 artists’ books, photographs and artist’s prototypes; and over 12,000 design objects that span the history of Modernism in the 20th century.
