Can You Do It? Yes, You Can As An Artist

I hear artists talking about not being able to make a living doing their art: I’m going to have to get a day job. But if you’re an artist, there’s already a day job: your art.

I’m surprised at how many people don’t realize this. As artists, our job is to create art. If we’re not doing that, then we’re not doing our jobs.

If you are an artist, you are an artist 24/7. Any time you spend on anything else is time you’re not spending on your art. So the question isn’t whether or not you can do it; it’s whether or not you will do it.

The work of being an artist is hard. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing, but it means that anyone who says it’s easy is either very good at making it look easy or totally full of shit.

The state of being an artist can be dramatically transformed by the presence or absence of a patron; the presence or absence of a gallery; the presence or absence of a grant; the presence or absence of a rich and supportive partner; the presence or absence of health insurance; the presence or absence of money in the bank; the presence or absences of dependents… and so on. And you can’t always control when these circumstances change.

There are basically two kinds of artists: those who have had a ton of breaks and those who haven’t had any. If you’re in one category, you’re probably not in much danger of thinking that anyone who hasn’t had your success is just lazy, and if you’re in the other category, you’re probably not in much danger of thinking that anyone else’s success was undeserved. But most artists are somewhere in between.

And on top of everything else, there is no such thing as “doing art.” Artists do art, yes, but only sometimes. And every so often they don’t

Being an artist is hard. There are no true artists. People make art every day, but usually in a very limited scope. Few can create something that is truly creative, new, and beautiful. It’s tough to find something that has never existed before.

But I think the struggle is worth it. Finding happiness takes work. I’m not saying you should do what you love because of the rewards; there aren’t any! But you can’t be happy if you don’t do the things that need to be done to ensure your happiness.

How do we define success? If your definition of success involves money or fame then forget it, they aren’t likely unless you’re willing to compromise your true self and sell out. Fame will bring other struggles along with it like depression and drugs but that’s another story for another blog post. For now I want to focus on how being an artist can be fulfilling without having fame or money being a factor in your life.

Artists are different from most people in that they see the world differently from everyone else around them. They have a unique perspective on life and get joy from sharing their vision with others through their work. You may not see an immediate benefit from your art but it’s important to keep creating anyway.*

An artist is someone who makes things, or creates experiences for people. Artists use an array of materials to create their work, but the most important ones are time and ideas. It’s a common misconception that artists need talent—and there’s a lot of debate about what “talent” is, anyway—but it’s not true. You can do anything you want to do as long as you put in the time and practice.

1) Work on your art every day

2) Practice, practice, practice; make mistakes and fix them

3) Learn from others, but follow your own voice

4) Don’t wait around for other people to tell you what to do; be brave

5) Do it for yourself first, because then you’ll never have any regrets

6) Don’t wait for inspiration; work every day so that inspiration will find you

7) Keep working even when it feels like nothing is happening; patience and hard work bring good results.**

Artist will be able to share their works with other artists and get feedback on their skills. With no doubt, this is a place where you can freely express yourself and start something new.

The street art that I would like to create is a statement of my own spirit or emotions, while encouraging others to express their own as well.

It can be in the form of words, pictures, or even something as simple as color.

With a little “eye-candy” maybe it will remind you of the time you took a chance to do something that you never did before and found out how good it felt.

Maybe it will just brighten your day. I hope that my work will send a positive message to all who see it, or those who hear about it.

It doesn’t matter if you are young or old, rich or poor, black or white, male or female…just so long as you appreciate the moment for what it is and take the opportunity to feel good about yourself.
