This is not a professional blog. This is my idea of what it looks like to have a conversation with people who share my interests and concerns. It’s something that happens in the school, done in public and on the web.

This blog will be about teaching and learning art, but it won’t be limited to teaching and learning art. The idea is to discuss things that get in the way of any kind of learning, but particularly things that get in the way of an artist learning how to make and show art.

And what do I mean by an artist? That’ll depend on the post. Sometimes I’ll be talking about artists who make visual art; sometimes writers; sometimes filmmakers; sometimes performers like dancers or actors; sometimes musicians or composers; sometimes scientists or mathematicians…I’ll try to keep track of which posts go where so if you just want to read about painters or photographers you can just follow that category.

There are also going to be posts about things other than art–

The aim of this blog is to share the learning experience of starting a painting course with beginners. You may not find it particularly useful if you have already successfully run an art course or are well-versed in the arts and crafts. The aim is to pass on tips, hints and suggestions which may prove helpful to others who have never taught an art course before. I may also make passing reference to my own artistic development but I will try not to bore you with too much about how wonderful my work is.

Towards this end, I will be sharing my own experiences as I go along, so that you can see the way in which a simple idea can be developed and expanded upon. I hope that you will share your own experiences and that together we can build up a comprehensive picture of how best to launch an art course which is interesting, challenging and fun for all involved.

I am also aware that there are many people out there who have already dabbled in arts education or even taught courses before, but who are therefore looking to improve their skills in some way. For these people, I hope that this blog will provide some useful advice as well as perhaps helping them discover new ways of looking at what they do.
