Mapping is one of the oldest and most important arts. Maps show us not just where we are but also where we have been and where we are going. It’s not surprising that maps have become a popular art form.

I’m an artist who creates custom map art for sale. I’ve sold hundreds of framed maps worldwide, and new orders come in every week. In this blog I share some of my favorite pieces with you, tell stories about how they were made, and discuss how to choose the right map art print for your home or office.

Telling stories is something artists have always done, but now anyone can do it. My blog is part of a larger movement in the art world to bring artists closer to their audience, and to help people find unique art that tells a story about themselves.

The maps are all original pieces of art, drawn and published in my house on antique presses. I don’t create digital prints or giclée prints (archival pigment ink prints). The maps are printed on acid-free, 100% cotton rag paper.

I hope the collection gives you a sense of the joy I get from drawing map art with old fashioned tools. Each map is an adventure in discovery and delights me with new details every time I look at it.

I had the great pleasure of illustrating 55 U.S. States in the style of 55 famous artists, each based on a favorite piece of art by that artist.

I had no idea how many different states were out there. The shapes are crazy and fascinating. If you are interested in an original piece contact me at: alex@alexmccandless.com

I am also finishing up a book about these maps that will be available in June 2017
