Mona Lisa: Leonardo da Vinci’s most well known painting. The Mona Lisa is one of the most famous works of art in the world, and was painted by Leonardo da Vinci in the early 16th century. It is also thought to have been painted in the same year that Michelangelo finished his first version of the Sistine Chapel ceiling and Michelangelo’s David was completed.

The Mona Lisa has been stolen from the Louvre museum in Paris twice, both times by Italian thieves. The first time, in 1911, it was recovered two years later by an Italian worker who found it wrapped in cloth and hidden in a broom cupboard. In August, 1911, a Louvre employee discovered that the painting had been chipped from its frame but was still missing. A review of security cameras turned up evidence that a former Louvre employee had stolen it.

The second time it was stolen was on August 21, 1974, when two armed Italian men sneaked into the museum with a ladder and took it from behind the bulletproof glass protecting it. This theft remains unsolved today; no one knows who stole it or where it is located.
