I’ve painted with my kids for a couple of years now, and I wish I had known about this online art school when we started. Jam Camp is an online art school for kids that offers tons of free and low cost classes.
My daughter, who is almost 4, has taken two classes from them, and my son, who is almost 2, has taken one class from them. The teachers are great at explaining how to paint and how to play with the paints. The classes are very well organized. There are not just painting classes but many different types of art classes including photography, printmaking, jewelry making, and food art among others.
Through the lessons they have learned so much about colors, shapes, textures and even new vocabulary words! They have really gotten into art after taking these classes. This was especially true for my son who spent a lot of time drawing before he took his first class. He really got into drawing after his first class and since then he has continued to draw all kinds of things on his own without being asked to do so or without being prompted or reminded to do so.
As a mom I love that the lessons are fun yet educational at the same time! Even if you don’t have kids you should check out their classes!
There are so many fun things to do in the great outdoors! One of my favorite things to do is paint! There are just so many different things you can paint and there are so many different textures to explore.
You can use a variety of materials for painting on, depending on what kind of texture you want. I have used everything from leaves and twigs to sand, rocks, and even dirt. You can also use a lot of different materials to mix your paint with including water, milk, yogurt, shaving cream, and even coco powder!
TIP: Make sure all your supplies are clean before starting.
Mix any desired color by adding small amounts of water or cocoa powder to your base color. Remember that the more water you add the more transparent the color will be. The more cocoa powder you add the darker it will be.
The best advice I can give when painting with children is to allow them to experiment and don’t be afraid for them to make mistakes just have fun! The kids had a blast making these rocks for our yard.”

Artists have used the term texture to describe the look of a surface for centuries. But what does texture really mean? And how do you create it in your art?
Texture can be broken down into three elements, each of which is important to capture in your painting: color, value, and edges.
The more time you spend mixing paint on your palette, and the more time you spend observing and recording what happens when you add water to your paint, the more flexibility and control you will have in creating rich textures.
A lot of people think that painting is hard to learn. It does take a lot of practice and a lot of patience, but it is not hard. In the late 1990’s I was invited by a local art school to teach the basics of painting to their students. When I explained that I had never taken any formal classes in art, the director was shocked. He said he had been told that I was an artist! I laughed and said, “I am an artist, but I didn’t know what I was doing until recently.”
Painting is something that anyone can learn to do if they have the desire to learn and are willing to put in the time to practice. Anyone can be an artist. So don’t worry if you feel like you are not a great artist or even if you feel like you are not artistic at all. You can still paint!
