In the world of art, there are some living artists who are also collectors. Some of these collectors have decided to share their collections with the public by loaning pieces to museums. This is a great idea, if you’re a collector and a fan of art.
But Jean Michel Basquiat’s collection has been held up in court for the last 15 years. The artist’s family doesn’t want it shared with the public. They have loaned some paintings to museums but have kept his most famous pieces hidden away. They filed an objection based on copyright law and lost. They filed again and lost again.
They appealed to the Supreme Court, and they lost there too. The court said that the works were not created for purposes of commerce and thus could not be copyrighted by their creator. But they can still be copyrighted if they were both made by an individual and independently created (i.e., not copies of something else). The thing is that no one really knows for sure if these paintings were individually created or copies of other artwork – probably because Basquiat used other artwork as inspiration for his own works, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
The problem is that copyright law doesn’t account for this grey area, so now courts will have to determine

Tens of thousands of art lovers from around the world visit the Jean Michel Basquiat exhibit at the Gagosian Gallery in New York City each year.
Jean Michel Basquiat was born on December 22, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York. His father, Gérard Basquiat, and mother Matilde were both of Haitian descent. The family lived in a basement apartment on Independence Street in the Lower East Side. Jean loved to paint as he grew older and his parents encouraged his talent by buying him art supplies. He was also known for being very tall at 5’10” and weighing around 143 pounds.
Towards the end of his high school career, Jean Michel’s art skills had gotten so good that his teacher asked him to paint a mural in the school library. Unfortunately it wasn’t long before Jean Michel dropped out of high school and decided to move out from his parent’s home to pursue his dream of becoming an artist.
When Jean Michel moved into his own apartment he also started selling some of his paintings for about $100 each. In 1982 he was approached by one of his friends name Pedro Algaze who was working at the Fun Gallery which was located on the Bowery in New York City. Mr. Algaze saw great potential in Jean Michel’s artwork and wanted to showcase it at the Fun Gallery for everyone to see. The gallery was started in 1976 by two artists John Gibson
Meet the new owner of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s infamous graffiti-style painting, which has been sold for $110.5 million at Christie’s auction house.
New York art collector and dealer Yusaku Maezawa was the lucky buyer of the 1981 painting at a Sotheby’s auction on Wednesday night, bidding by phone. The work, “Untitled,” is one of several painted by Basquiat (1958-1988) in 1981 that depict police tape on a canvas.
The sale price broke records for the highest amount paid for an American artist at auction. The previous record holder was also held by a Basquiat piece — “Untitled”, which was sold for $57 million in May 2016.
“I hope to continue to collect him so I can leave as much of his works as possible to the museum and to young people,” Mr Maezawa said in a press release from Christie’s following the sale. “I want to make this artwork accessible to everyone.”
He added: “I am thrilled and honoured that I got to own such a great piece of art.”
A New York Times investigation into Basquiat’s life and legacy published over the weekend revealed that there are still many other works by Basquiat being kept
JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT is a famous American painter who lived in the late 20th century. He painted a lot of pictures, and now one of them has sold for $110.5 million at Sotheby’s auction. That’s a new record for the most expensive piece of art ever sold at auction.
The painting was bought by a Japanese man named Yusaku Maezawa, who made his money with an online fashion business. He says he plans to keep it in his personal collection.
$110.5 million! I don’t understand how that works, but it sounds like a lot of money, and if that’s what somebody wants to spend on a painting, more power to him. But I want to talk about another Basquiat painting, not that one. Because that other one is still around, and I want it to be mine, and maybe yours too.
I’m talking about Basquiat’s masterpiece: “Dustheads” (1982). It’s much less famous than the one Mr. Maezawa just bought; you’ve probably never heard of it…
