I began to wonder where I could find affordable art, especially since so many of the pieces I saw by living artists were quite expensive.

I was also looking for a piece that had a story behind it. Something with meaning.

I began my quest by asking friends if they knew of any artists who did amazing work on the lower end of the price spectrum (under $5000). Not only did I get one name, but many more. But how would I ever find the time to go see them all?

After asking my friends, then going online and seeing what galleries in the area carried affordable art, I decided to ask my art classes if they had any suggestions. We made a list of galleries and studios within an hour’s drive from my house, and then divided up the list to visit over a couple weekends. We discovered some amazing artists and incredible artwork.

The names on our list include: Ellen Gallagher, Cletus Nelson, Consuelo Castillo Lorca, Andres Serrano, Martin Puryear, Charles Simonds, Tim Rarus and Paul McCarthy (who is no longer represented by Brant-Leeder).
