Robert Venosa was born in New York City on February 15, 1956. He attended both the High School of Art & Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology, but rather than pursuing an artistic career he chose to work in the advertising industry. It was during this time that Robert fell in love with Venice, Italy and learned to paint watercolors. Shortly thereafter, Robert left a promising career in advertising and began his exploration into fine art and oil painting.

Robert Venosa and his art has been a part of my life for many years and I still find it fascinating. Robert was an artist whose paintings are always original, have a very unique style, and often have a spiritual/mystical element to them.
Robert Venosa died in 2006 at the age of 76 in Venice, California. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 25, 1930 to Italian parents (his father was from Palermo). Robert started drawing at an early age, around the age of five.
Towards the end of high school he began painting for fun. After some time he already had his own style of painting which was basically influenced by Paul Klee and Joan Miro.
Robert attended Pratt Institute in New York City where he studied art from 1947 to 1949. It was there that he met artist Max Ernst who later became a friend and mentor. It was Ernst who encouraged Robert to go to Europe and paint landscapes in the style of Flemish painter Pieter Brueghel the Younger. He received a scholarship and went to Italy in 1950 where he met Hans Arp (another friend) who would later become one of his biggest influences on his art career.

In 1983 he left New York with his wife to create a new life in Venice, Italy. Their son, Vincent Venosa, was born there in 1984. Venosa’s first critical success came in 1986 when he was one of the artists selected for the landmark exhibition “The Sacred Mirror: Images of Women and Desire” at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C.
