The Minneapolis Institute of Art is located in the Midtown Global Market at 2800 Southlawn Drive, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The museum houses over 80,000 objects that date from 5000 BC to today. Highlights include collections of Asian art, pre-Columbian art, African art and European art.

The mia has three buildings and a sculpture garden. The three buildings are the Stone Building, designed by McKim Mead & White and completed in 1915; the Modern Wing designed by OMA New York and completed in 2009; and the Linde Entrance designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects and completed in 2001. A large sculpture garden is located between the Linde Entrance building and the Stone Building.

The Stone Building features European paintings from the Italian Renaissance to contemporary work as well as Spanish Colonial paintings, Turkish carpets and Chinese porcelains. It also has several exhibits of traditional African arts, including masks, textiles and pottery. The Modern Wing houses American paintings from the 18th century through today as well as a collection of modern Asian art that includes Indian miniatures, Japanese woodblock prints, Chinese ceramics, Thai lacquerware and Korean cer

One of the most successful ways to visit MIA is to bring a group of friends. Groups are extremely welcome, and can be accommodated at almost any hour in many galleries. To learn more about group visits, call us at 612.375.7600 or email groupvisits@artsmia.org.

The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm, with late night Thursday until 9 pm and Friday until 10 pm (excluding May 1). The galleries close for an hour on Wednesday mornings from 10 am to 11 am for floor maintenance; however during this time our Café Moderna will remain open for coffee service. On Mondays join us for our free Family Day from 10 am to 5 pm.

Our galleries are accessible by elevator and barrier-free access is available throughout the museum, including reserved parking in front of the museum. Wheelchairs are available for use during your visit at no charge in the Coat Check Room on the main level near the Terrace Cafe entrance.

The MIA is one of the largest art museums in the country, but also one of the least known. Its permanent collection includes a wide range of art from all eras. It has over 100,000 objects, including ancient and contemporary art.

The museum is housed in a beautiful building with a number of special exhibits each year. It’s located between the University of Minnesota and downtown Minneapolis and is easily accessible by public transportation or car.

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts is now under construction and won’t re-open until sometime in 2017. But the new addition will be a lovely space to view art and they have been posting updates on their blog. A few highlights:

The new building will make it possible for MIA to display more of their collection and give them a more flexible space for changing exhibits. The new building will also hold a 150 seat theatre, a cafe, and an outdoor terrace that features a sculpture garden with views of downtown Minneapolis.

Minneapolis has a unique design for their new museum that mixes various architectural styles, making it look like “it’s been around since forever.” The building is made up of three separate buildings that form an ‘L’ shaped structure, with the main entrance facing the Walker Art Center and Loring Park. The institute’s gallery is also worth visiting . The collection consists of over 32,000 pieces and spans thousands of years. Some of the world’s best artists are represented there, from old masters to contemporary artists.

The institute is located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, near major theater and music venues, as well as many restaurants. There is a lot to do across the street, including eating at one of the many cafes and walking around the sculpture garden.
