The Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA) is a world-class artistic and educational institution located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota. MIA’s comprehensive collection of art ranges from ancient to contemporary and spans the globe, providing a dynamic context for learning and enjoyment through the visual arts.

Tens of thousands of people visit MIA each year to view our collection and exhibitions, including thousands of children participating in school and group programs. We offer free admission to all visitors.

MIA is an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation governed by a Board of Trustees. As one of the largest art museums in the Upper Midwest, we are an integral part of the cultural fabric and provide unique access to diverse artistic experiences for our community.

The Minneapolis Institute of Art, or MIA, is a museum and regional art center located in the city of Minneapolis. It was founded in 1883 by twelve citizens who wished to establish a permanent museum for the collection and exhibition of art objects. The MIA has become one of the most respected art centers in the United States, and is recognized as a leader in collecting and exhibiting contemporary art.

Tours are available Monday through Friday at 10:30 a.m. (except holidays) and on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. Please note that tours are not available on MIA’s free admission days: Tuesdays and the first four Fridays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; see calendar for details.

The museum offers educational programs for children, teens and adults; hosts lectures by internationally known artists, curators and critics; maintains an impressive permanent collection; and is home to more than 400 diverse works of public art throughout its facility, including Olin C. Wilson’s “Child in Nature,” installed on Nicollet Mall in 2004.*

The Minneapolis Institute of Art is a non-profit art museum originally founded as the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts in 1883. The MIA offers free admission, open hours and free parking. It is located at 2400 Third Avenue South in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, near the Walker Art Center and across the street from Mill City Museum.

The institute is one of the largest museums in the country, housing over 100,000 pieces of artwork. The MIA has a full schedule of exhibitions for adults and children alike. History

The Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts was established on December 13, 1883 by a group of women artists who called themselves “the Friday Club.” Among its founding members were painters Mary Burley Veeder and Margaret Sophia Hewitt (the first president) as well as sculptor Harriet Hosmer. In total there were 16 women among the founding members who have been credited with founding the museum
