We have been in business for over 30 years, much of that time selling antiques and reproductions to home decorators, interior designers, and collectors. Our company was founded in 1979 when my father, Paul Kollman, decided to leave his job as an engineer and open a small shop in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The store did not begin with any particular theme or focus; it just sold odds and ends that appealed to my father. We had a number of large antique pieces — chests and tables — but also some smaller things such as jewelry and decorative items made from antlers.
We sold these items for several years before I joined the business full-time after finishing college in 1986. But by that time we were beginning to realize how much our customers loved gothic art. They found it exciting and unique, unlike anything else available at the time. An antique dealer will know something about every item in his or her shop. That flagstone floor from a house built in 1764 is from a farmhouse in Maine, not one in New Hampshire. That signet ring came from an estate with a specific history, not some generic old ring that someone found in a drawer. The brass lantern has been lovingly cared for, the patina doesn’t flake off. The upholstery is done to suit the period and style of the piece, not slapped on at random by someone who doesn’t know any better.
The value of an antique is determined partly by its age but also by its condition and provenance (history), among other things. In many ways, buying an antique is like buying a used car: you want to get something that’s been well cared for that fits your lifestyle and budget.
