Modern art rejected traditional ideas about harmony and accepted imbalance as an aesthetic norm. In music, they explored unusual, dissonant harmonic combinations: polytonality, where two different keys are played simultaneously; microtonality, which uses tones so small that they cannot be easily heard; atonality or total chromaticism in which no one key or set of pitches is favored; and aleatoric music where chance decides which notes will be played in any given set of circumstances.
