As I was preparing to get a new tattoo, I started doing a little research on tattoos in general and one of the things I ran across were some horror stories about people who had gotten tattoos. This is an attempt to chronicle my experience (good and bad) and provide you with the top 8 things you need to know before getting a tattoo.

Tattoos are permanent and are seen by everyone. They are a great form of body art, but you need to be aware of a few things before you get one. To help you out, here are the top 8 things you need to know before getting a tattoo.

Tattoo shops can range from hole-in-the-wall establishments to high end shops with professional artists that rival their counterparts in fine arts. There are even tattoo artists that have gone on to win awards at art shows.

The best way to find a good tattoo shop is by word of mouth. Don’t just get a random shop off the street, unless it’s the only one available. People who have been recommended to a shop by people they trust will give you the best information about it.

If you haven’t found any good shops in your area, or don’t have any friends that have tattoos, try searching online for local tattoo artists. Just be sure to check them out first!

You’ve decided to get a tattoo. You know you want something, but aren’t sure what, or where on your body it should go. Here are 8 things you need to know before getting a tattoo.

Do I need to do this myself? Some people like to think that tattoos are so special that they must be designed and done by the one who will wear it. While this is true in some cases (like portraiture), it’s more often than not just a way for the artist to unload the responsibility (and liability) of creating something non-standard onto the client.

In other words, if you want an off-the-shelf design, don’t expect the artist to make it for you. Sure, they may charge more, but every artist I’ve spoken with has said they would rather give you an idea than design something from scratch. Just understand that if you’re doing this yourself, your artist is not going to be able to help when you run into problems.

It’s also important to note that many states have laws prohibiting people from performing surgery on themselves or others. If you’re considering doing it yourself and live in one of these states, check the laws carefully! How much does it cost? Tattoo prices vary wildly

Do your homework and be prepared. Don’t take it lightly, and don’t do anything you’ll regret. Tattoos are for life, so make sure it’s something you really want before you get it done.

Why do you want a tattoo? What will it mean to you? It’s not just a fun thing to do with your friends. It’s a commitment that can’t be undone, even if you change your mind about what the tattoo means to you later on in life. Make sure you’re well-educated about what goes into getting a tattoo before going into a shop and asking for one. You’ll be inking yourself for the rest of your life, so make an educated decision!

It should also go without saying that if you have any allergies or sensitivities to certain inks or needles, let the artist know before they start working on your body. Not all artists are trained to deal with these issues, so this is important! If they don’t know how to deal with it or don’t care too much about your health, find someone else that does care and is willing to work with you. The last thing anyone wants is an allergic reaction that can lead to infection because someone didn’t know how to handle the issue.

The first thing you need to know about getting a tattoo is that it hurts. I don’t know anyone who has ever gotten a tattoo and didn’t say it hurt. That is why the needle goes under the skin instead of over the skin, so you don’t feel it as much.

The second thing you need to know is that it’s addicting. Once you get your first tattoo, you will most likely want another one. The saying goes “once a tattoo, always a tattoo” and I believe it. I know two people who were both afraid they were going to regret getting their tattoos, but then didn’t regret them. One is getting tattoos on her fingers now and the other has three more tattoos than she did before she got her first one. Tattoos are addicting for many reasons: you feel like everyone is staring at your new art, once you get something on your body it feels like it’s yours forever (which could be good or bad), and there are always new designs to look at.

Tattoos are also like potato chips…you can’t just have one! If you already have tattoos or are thinking about getting one, then this probably isn’t news to you; this post is directed toward those who don’t have any ink
