1. The Hoover Dam is Art Deco
Art Deco architecture was created in the 1920s and 1930s as a response to the rise of factories and machines. Art Deco buildings were designed with smooth geometric shapes, sometimes with unusual ornaments, which helped soften the hard forms of new architecture. The Hoover Dam is a perfect example of an Art Deco building design.
The Hoover Dam (named after President Herbert Hoover) was built to control floods and provide irrigation water to the American Southwest, specifically Nevada, Arizona, and California. Construction began in 1931 on the dam site located on the Colorado River between Nevada and Arizona. The dam was completed in 1936, at a cost of $49 million (not adjusted for inflation). Seventy-five men died during construction. In 1936, the dam was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of his New Deal program.
Today, the dam provides electricity for residents of Nevada, Arizona and California; supplies water for irrigation; generates hydroelectric power for Nevada; and provides flood control for California and Arizona.*
