My college had a program for recent grads called Career Pathways, which helped me find out what employers wanted when hiring recent college grads, and how to tailor my resume and cover letter for the most appealing effect. This blog is based on the tips and tricks I’ve learned in the process of applying to jobs after graduation.
Tailoring your resume and cover letter is essential to getting that first job out of college. It’s hard because you don’t know how each prospective employer will react to your application. You have no idea what they’re actually looking for, so you’re unsure how to present yourself.
One way to get around this is to read through employers’ websites and other materials and find out what they’re interested in. Interviewers at some companies may ask questions like: “What are your strengths?” “What are your weaknesses?” “What are some things you’ve done in the past that have prepared you for this job?” “Why did you apply for this job?”
I’ve noticed that there are many students who ask for advice on what to do after graduation. I wanted to make a short list of things that can be done to help in your search for that first job out of college.
First thing: get yourself on LinkedIn. This will give you a place to put all your information and also a chance to network with others in the field. Second, make a website for yourself. Even if it’s simple, having a site with your resume and information will be helpful. “Art Space” is my personal portfolio site. Linkedin and your own portfolio site will be essential when applying to jobs, so start building them now! ”

Tailor your resume for the job you want. Tailor your cover letter for the position you are applying for and tailor it again for the person who will be reading it. Make sure you know what they are looking for and what they value before you submit your application.
No one wants to hire someone who can’t spell or doesn’t understand how to use proper grammar. Many employers won’t even consider an application if a candidate has misspelled words or incorrect grammar/punctuation within their application package and some companies won’t even look at an application that does not have a cover letter.
When sending out resumes make sure that you use high quality paper and print them on a laser printer (many companies will not accept anything less than laser printed). Make sure that you have all contact information on them because many potential employers may scan through hundreds of resumes in search of someone qualified.
When writing your cover letter, try to emphasize any experience you have with the company or particular field of study/work you are applying for as well as reiterate
Art space is important because it sets the tone for what kind of art you can expect to find at that school. If you visit a college and find that the art on display is not what you are looking for, or not what you expected, then it will be harder for you to see if the school is right for you.
There is one exception: if your ideal school does not have an art space, don’t let that stop you from applying.
One thing to look out for in an art space is whether they have a regular rotation of work. This shows that they are taking care of their collection and keeping it fresh and interesting.
If there is no art space, try to visit when there’s a special exhibit on campus. You can sometimes get a sense of how well the school takes care of their collection if they have a gallery or museum where they keep pieces from different time periods.’
