Sculpting the human figure is one of the most difficult challenges for an artist. How does one create a sculpture that captures the form and likeness of a person or deity, while still maintaining a three-dimensional appearance?

Many artists have attempted to address this challenge, including Michelangelo. When considering the top sculptures by Michelangelo, it is important to understand his personal history with sculpture, as well as the influences that helped to shape his style.

Taken directly from Michelangelo’s autobiography, here are some details about his work and life:

• I was born in Caprese and brought up in Florence at my father’s house, which was in a street called Macello di Città.

• I began by learning to draw from my master Ghirlandaio. From him I learned the manner of drawing in fresco, tempera and on panel; and it was he who instructed me how to draw from nature in relief and in any other way that might be adopted.

• I began the study of sculpture before the age of twelve years, though I had not yet turned my thoughts towards large works.

• At twenty years of age I made certain figures in clay; also certain freestanding nude figures of marble for practice;

The marble statue of David was created by Michelangelo between 1501 and 1504. This statue is the most well-known work of art by Michelangelo, as well as one of the most famous sculptures in the world. It is an excellent example of Renaissance artwork and subject matter, and has become an enduring symbol of Florence.

Tours to see David are a huge draw for tourists; nearly 500,000 visitors come to see it every year. The statue is located inside the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence.

It is a remarkable sculpture because it shows so much emotion and motion even though the figure itself is not moving. The viewer feels that David is just about to step down off his pedestal and get back into battle. The eye contact that he makes with those who look at him makes the viewer feel as if there is no escape from this warrior’s gaze. He represents strength that could overcome any obstacle or enemy.

The statue was commissioned from Michelangelo by the Opera del Duomo (the Cathedral’s Committee) in Florence in 1504, when they decided to build a monument to David in order to celebrate his defeat over Goliath in Biblical times. They chose a youthful representation of David rather than an older one because they wanted to represent

The Pieta is a famous marble sculpture by Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti, housed in St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City. The statue depicts the body of Jesus after his crucifixion, and is housed in St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican Museums, Rome.

The statue depicts Jesus lying on his mother Mary’s lap, with his legs broken by the weight of the cross. The Virgin Mary is depicted weeping for her son. The sculpture is a popular tourist attraction in Rome with over 4 million visitors annually.

The Sistine Chapel ceiling is an artwork created by Michelangelo Buonarroti and it is located in the Vatican City, Rome. This great artwork is a fresco painted with tempera on the wall and the painting was completed between 1508 and 1512.

The ceiling is one of the most famous works of art in the world and it depicts several important religious scenes from the Bible. It shows nine stories from Genesis, starting with “The Creation of Adam” and ending with “The Separation of Light from Darkness”. The scenes also include stories from other parts of the Bible such as “The Last Judgment”, “The Drunkenness of Noah”, “Abraham Sacrificing Isaac”, etc. There are around 300 figures in this masterpiece. The whole room is decorated with beautiful paintings and sculptures that are connected to the ceiling.

The fresco has deteriorated over time but it still shows us how innovative Michelangelo was when he painted this ceiling.
