The word ikebana, meaning “living flower,” refers to the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement. It is a form of art that has evolved over centuries and is commonly practiced by a great number of people in Japan and around the world. I am writing this blog in hopes that I can provide an insight into this beautiful art to those who are curious about it or are considering becoming students of ikebana themselves. My name is Anna Landin, and I have been studying ikebana for just shy of two years now, and have been teaching classes to others for almost a year. One of the most interesting things about this art form is that it took so many decades before it became popular with commoners. The reason for its popularity is largely due to its adoption by the samurai class in 1676. The samurai were a warrior class that had become increasingly powerful and influential during the Edo period.
