It has three main buildings. The West Building features art from the beginning of America and before, East Building features European paintings and sculptures, and the Sculpture Garden displays outdoor works.

The West Building also houses a restaurant and a gift shop. There are four floors, with high ceilings, which allows large pieces to be displayed there.

Some notable artists that have work at the NGA include: Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Claude Monet and Henri Matisse.

This building actually had a very interesting history as there were designs on the table to actually build this museum underground. The problem with that idea was that it would be very hard for people to find the museum and get there if they didn’t know where it was located or how to get there. Because the design was too expensive, this idea was scrapped and instead building it above ground was decided upon.*

The museum’s collection includes more than 140,000 works of American and European art from the late-1300s to the present. It contains a particularly rich collection of late-19th-century and early 20th-century American paintings, including major works by George Bellows, Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, John Singer Sargent and Childe Hassam. The modern art collection features such iconic artists as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning and Robert Rauschenberg.

The NGA has a large collection of sculpture as well. Many of them are in the museum’s sculpture garden. They include works by Auguste Rodin and Henry Moore. The modern sculpture garden also features work by Mark di Suvero and Richard Serra.
