The National Gallery of Art, or NGA lies just inside the National Mall on the north side and is one of the premier museums in the country. Though it was founded in 1937, it was not finished until 1941 for lack of funds.

It has three main buildings. The West Building features art from the beginning of America and before, East Building features European paintings and sculptures, and the Sculpture Garden displays outdoor works.

The West Building also houses a restaurant and a gift shop. There are four floors, with high ceilings, which allows large pieces to be displayed there.

Some notable artists that have work at the NGA include: Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Claude Monet and Henri Matisse.

The NGA is free to all visitors and open every day except December 25th

The problem with that idea was that it would be very hard for people to find the museum and get there if they didn’t know where it was located or how to get there. Because the design was too expensive, this idea was scrapped and instead building it above ground was decided upon.*

It contains a particularly rich collection of late-19th-century and early 20th-century American paintings, including major works by George Bellows, Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, John Singer Sargent and Childe Hassam. The modern art collection features such iconic artists as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning and Robert Rauschenberg.

The NGA has a large collection of sculpture as well. Many of them are in the museum’s sculpture garden. They include works by Auguste Rodin and Henry Moore. The modern sculpture garden also features work by Mark di Suvero and Richard Serra.
