SFMOMA is a one of a kind museum that I’ve visited and always enjoy it’s exhibits. The SFMOMA Mission is to celebrate the power and potential of art, design, and the performing arts through enriching experiences with exceptional artworks, exemplary exhibitions, diverse educational programs, and vibrant public spaces. SFMOMA has been on my list of places to visit since I moved to San Francisco in 2003.
SFMOMA was established in 1935 by the San Francisco Museum of Art Association. In 1995, the museum merged with MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) located in New York City that was originally founded in 1929 as an exhibition venue for modern art. Today, SFMOMA is an artistic organization that is dedicated to presenting outstanding works of art from the 19th century to today.
SFMOMA’s collection includes approximately 8,000 works of painting, sculpture, photography, architecture and design from artists including Jackson Pollock, Henri Matisse and Andy Warhol. SFMOMA hosts approximately 150 exhibitions annually showcasing local, national and international artists’ work. They have vast collection that spans over 100 years.
Art is an interesting thing. It’s something that can be seen and understood by everyone, and when done right it can take you to a completely different place. It’s also one of the few things that can bring people together regardless of their differences. You don’t have to like the same things or even like each other, but you can all appreciate the same piece of art. In fact, many artists like to use this in their work, allowing them to include symbols or themes found in different cultures.
Trying to find common ground is important in today’s world. There are so many different beliefs and ways of thinking out there, it’s easy for people to get caught up in what sets them apart from others and forget what they have in common. That’s why art is important, because it allows us to see past our differences and understand that we all have similar feelings when exposed to similar things.
Though most of us might not have been blessed with artistic talent, we can still appreciate what others create. It doesn’t matter if you’re not the artist – you could be someone who enjoys reading about art or just a person who likes looking at it – but you should still consider yourself part of the art community because anyone who appreciates art is part of it whether
The SFMOMA is a great museum-it has one of the best collections in the entire country, not just in California. It’s a beautiful building to spend time inside, and it has a fantastic cafe. The staff are all friendly and helpful-if you get a chance to go, definitely take advantage of it!
We had a great time at SFMOMA-they have some really cool exhibits that are always changing, so it’s definitely worth going back if you can.

The museum is dedicated to being a place where anyone can experience art and be exposed to new ideas. It offers free admission on Friday nights from 5pm-9pm and free admission every fourth Wednesday from 5pm-8pm. In addition to this, the museum offers free docent tours for visitors who want to learn about the pieces in their collection more personally; there are tours available every 15 minutes. These tours are guided by the museum’s staff members and volunteers and take place throughout the day.
Since 1922, the San Francisco Museum of Modern art has been committed to collecting and exhibiting modern and contemporary art in order to provide the public with a comprehensive survey of artistic production in our times.
SFMOMA’s collection, which now numbers over 33,000 works including paintings, sculpture, photography, new media installations, architectural models and drawings, as well as historic and contemporary design objects, is housed in a landmark building that has become a signature institution for the city.
We seek to engage audiences from all walks of life through exhibitions and programs that reflect our commitment to presenting cutting-edge work by both established and emerging artists. The SFMOMA held a major retrospective of the work of painter Wayne Thiebaud in fall 2014. The exhibit was titled “Wayne Thiebaud: Painting Pictures” and featured over 60 pieces of his artwork, many being shown for the first time in decades.
After the exhibit, SFMOMA closed its doors to begin renovation, leaving the gallery space empty until further notice. For over 50 years Thiebaud’s work has been featured in exhibits around the world but now it is on display once again where it all began when SFMOMA first opened its doors to the public in 1995.
The artist’s wife, Dessa Koskoff, died earlier this year and he felt it was important for him to honor her memory and their lives together by exhibiting at SFMOMA one last time before closing forever.
