History of graffiti art

The purpose of the site is to provide an easy and quick way to find out about graffiti artists, the history of graffiti art, graffiti style and the culture surrounding it.

The site is currently still in development. I am adding more content as fast as i can to make this site a complete information source for all things graffiti related.

The first documented use of the word Graffiti in the English language was in a book by Captain William S. Burroughs entitled, “The Art of Getting Up”:

“I have tried to analyze the psychology of people who graffiti walls and put their signatures on buildings. The main impulse seems to be a desire to go up higher and higher.”

Graffiti was referred to as a nuisance in ancient Rome, and in ancient Greece there were laws against it. The term “graffiti” originated from the Greek word “graphien,” meaning “to write”. The Greeks began using this word when referring to graffiti found on monuments. In Rome, graffiti was also called “scritti” or “scribbles”.

“You can’t stop art,” says Malcolm McLaren, “because art stops you.” And indeed, in the last few decades, a number of once-forbidden forms of expression have found their way into the public eye. From abstract painting to Dada, from counterculture to punk rock and from hip-hop to slam poetry, nonconformist art is slowly but surely making its way into the world’s collective consciousness. The most recent movement to find its niche has been graffiti, a form of expression that takes many different forms but is essentially the same throughout: an act of rebellion against all that lies around it and an attempt to create an individual identity within a society characterized by sameness and conformity.

As most people know, graffiti is illegal. It involves defacing property – either one’s own or someone else’s – without permission, which makes it not only a crime but also a form of vandalism. But despite this illegality, graffiti artists continue to flourish all around the world. Indeed, some consider it to be one of the most rapidly growing art forms today.

This can be explained in part by its accessibility; like modern art itself, graffiti relies on accessibility. Unlike abstract painting or sculpting, with their high prices and difficult techniques, anyone can learn

Before the days of modern graffiti and street art, there was a time when people used to write on the walls. Just like today, it wasn’t always for art; it was also for advertising, as well as for simple communication.

The Ancient Egyptians were one of the first civilizations to leave behind evidence of what we would consider graffiti today. In Egyptian hieroglyphics, there are examples of ancient writing etched into the stone of their temples. They wrote about everything from the events in their lives to religious scripture, and sometimes even wrote things just because they thought it was funny, such as “drinks for everyone”.

Tombstones were also common places for graffiti in ancient Egypt. Often times, people would carve their names into them so that others would know who built such an amazing monument. In addition, many artists would also create images or designs on tombstones, such as images of people or gods.

Graffiti in ancient Greece was considered to be quite disrespectful by some. However, many others viewed it as a way to communicate and spread messages all over the city. Graffiti in ancient Greece can be traced back to around 700 BC when it was used by merchants on buildings and monuments to advertise their product or services.
