With so many options for getting started with Life Drawing classes, it’s hard to know where to begin. The following is a guide for those who are interested in taking life drawing classes, but have never been and don’t know where to begin. Life Drawing tools can be an expensive area to get into, especially if you’re just starting out.
Trial and Error: The best way to get started with a new hobby or activity is to try it out, but the most reliable way to do that is to find a friend who already does it and see if they’ll let you tag along. Depending on how popular the class is, this could be very easy or very difficult. If you live in a big city, it will probably be easier than if you live in a small town or rural area. If you don’t have someone who can take you along with them, then you can either sign up for a class without knowing what classes are available in your area or do some research online first.
The Internet: There are many websites that offer information about life drawing classes, but many of them charge for the information (which ranges from $25-$100 per search), so it might not be worth it depending on how long you plan on keeping the information. The free

There are a number of different drawing mediums that you can choose from, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. For beginners, the most accessible medium is probably pencil. It’s simple to get started with and inexpensive, making it ideal for those just starting out. However, pencils have their limitations too.
The best life drawing classes focus on pencil mostly during the beginning levels. This is mainly because pencils are easy to lend out and are also more forgiving than some other mediums if you make a mistake. There is no great challenge in using a pencil; they’re readily available almost everywhere you go. As a result, there’s not much pressure to buy your own set right away.
A beginner’s pencil set will consist of a wooden case containing 12 or 24 pencils. They will be labeled with the letters A-H, with A being the hardest lead and H being the softest lead. The higher the letter, the darker and harder the lead will be.
In addition to these life drawing classes, there may be a set of 2B leads included as well. These are harder than HB leads but softer than 2H leads. If you’re just starting out and have trouble seeing your lines properly, try using 2B leads instead of HB leads

Why is life drawing important?
Life drawing is the best way to improve your ability to draw the human body. You will learn how to see proportion and form, you will learn how to draw hands, feet, heads and bodies from a variety of angles. You will also learn how to draw from imagination. Life drawing classes will teach you how to use light and shadow to create the illusion of volume and mass. Your life drawing skills will give you the tools to create an accurate and believable rendering of any subject.
Life drawing is important because it teaches you valuable artistic skills that will help you in both portraiture and figurative art.*
So where do I start?
The first thing you need is a model – someone who sits still for long periods of time while people draw them. There are many options for finding a model but the easiest is probably Craigslist. Go ahead and post an ad stating that you want to be a part of a life drawing class (post naked photos if you want) and that’s just about it! Once you have your models lined up, go ahead and find a place to hold your sessions. The best place would be one with natural light. Open spaces like parks can also be used if there aren’t too many trees around.
As a beginner, you may wonder what to expect in this type of class. What should I wear? How do I hold my pencil? What will the model be like?
The Art School Chicago offers Beginner Life Drawing classes every Saturday at noon. This class is $20 per session and lasts two hours. You are also welcome to bring your own supplies, but the school will provide drawing boards for all students. We have large windows to allow for natural light and a wall with mirrors for students who would like some assistance in drawing from different angles.
The model is usually a professional nude model that we hire from the Chicagoland area. They are very talented and comfortable with their bodies!
You can choose to draw from life or use a live model as a reference for your own drawings at home. Whether you’re an experienced artist or just taking your first art class, beginner life drawing is a great way to learn new skills and meet other artists, as well as see new perspectives of familiar subject matter.
