I’m not an art critic, so I won’t try to pass judgment on Trevor Henderson’s work. But I can tell you that it’s beautiful and evocative. And I can tell you what an incredible experience it was to get a glimpse of his creative process.
Trevor is a self-taught artist who made the jump from doodling in the margins of his math homework to creating vibrant paintings full of color and life. It wasn’t until he began posting photographs of his work on the internet that he gained any recognition for his talent.
But now that his work has been featured in magazine articles and galleries, Trevor has felt compelled to take a step back from the public eye and focus on creating art that’s more personal, more meaningful. His blog chronicles not just the process of creating new work, but also his thoughts about art and creativity in general, as well as glimpses into the world of an artist working off the beaten path.

Trevor Henderson is a sculptor of contemporary figurative art, who works in stone. The work is highly crafted and the materials are usually rich and occasionally precious. The imagery and concepts derive from his own imagination, although they may at times be drawn from literature, cinema or the classics.
The themes are sometimes of an epic nature, but other pieces are more intimate. A painting for instance may concentrate on a single moment in an imagined narrative which might be described as ‘epic’, or it might be a portrait of an individual head or torso.
Trevor was born in Yorkshire in 1951 and spent most of his childhood in West London. He began drawing and painting seriously at school and developed a strong interest in sculpture from an early age. In his teens he spent many hours studying Michelangelo’s work at the Victoria & Albert Museum, and Rodin’s sculptures at the Tate Gallery. He also attended life classes at Chelsea School of Art and Saint Martin’s School of Art during this period.(1) (2)
He studied English Literature at Leeds University between 1970 – 72 before moving to London where he worked variously as a waiter, assistant cook, builder’s labourer and maintenance man while studying full time at Chelsea School of Art.(3) (4
Trevor Henderson is an artist who is interested in making art that is fun and accessible for everyone. He has been making art for as long as he can remember, starting at a very early age, and he has always been especially interested in the way textures, patterns and colors work together to create a particular visual impression.
Trevor Henderson’s artwork has been featured in galleries around the world, and has also been used by many different companies. One of the most popular uses of his artwork has been on skateboards, which have appeared in many magazines as part of ad campaigns. His artwork has also been used on tee shirts, sticker packs, wooden boards, snowboards and all sorts of other products. Trevor Henderson often draws both skateboarders and surfers and their surrounding environments in order to capture the feel of the culture through his artwork.
He is currently working on more paintings in addition to selling prints of his past works and skateboard graphics via the internet.”
Trevor Henderson is a NYC artist who makes contemporary sculptures and paintings. These are created through a process of deconstruction and re-imagination of existing artworks.
His work has been shown at numerous galleries and museums including the Museum of Arts and Design, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Wadsworth Atheneum and the Perez Art Museum Miami.
Trevor Henderson lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
Trevor Henderson was born in El Paso, Texas. He attended Fort Bliss Elementary School and graduated from Irvin High School in 1973. He then began his studies at the University of Texas at El Paso, where he majored in Studio Art.
Trevor’s artistic abilities were noticed by faculty members and other students early on in his college career, and he spent many hours honing his craft at the university’s art studio.
His time at UTEP was short-lived, however; after spending only one year enrolled at the school, Henderson decided to pursue a higher education at a different institution.
He earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Toledo in 1980. While attending UT, Henderson took advantage of every opportunity to study under some of the finest artists of that time, including Bill Traylor, Robert Rickey and Dennis Oppenheim.
Trevor went on to earn his Master of Fine Arts degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. While at BGSU he studied with artists John Baeder and William Christenberry.
He then served as an assistant professor for two years before becoming a freelance artist in 1990. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad, and has been featured on numerous magazine covers.

Trevor Henderson, who eared first prize in the national fine arts competition and was awarded the national grant of excellence, was born in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica on October 16, 1944. He attended high school at Jamaica College and then entered the University of West Indies. He graduated with a B.Sc. in chemistry in 1967 and immediately started working for the National Housing Trust as an analytical chemist.
