She had always dreamed of living abroad, and after moving to Australia eight years ago on a working holiday visa, she found herself drawn to the city of Newcastle. She had come to visit her brother, who was already living in Australia, and was immediately captivated by the region’s charm. As she explored the area, she discovered a newfound passion for the city and its people, and decided to make it her home base. Since September 2024, she has rented a house in Bar Beach, but she and her partner have also spent time in other places across the city. The two met in Australia, and she has also had the opportunity to exhibit and sell her art in Slovakia and Brazil, where she has also had the chance to experience the beauty of the country’s castles. For Chabadova, Newcastle is a city that sparks her creativity and inspires her to create art that reflects her love for the place. She has been inspired by the city’s lighthouses, particularly the Nobby’s Headland Lighthouse, which she says has a striking resemblance to the castles of Slovakia. “I was drawn to the lighthouse because of its striking resemblance to the castles of Slovakia,” she says. “I found it fascinating that the shape of the lighthouse looked like a castle, and the city of Newcastle looked like the landscape of Slovakia. It was like I was seeing the world from a different perspective.”
Since her residency, Chabadova has been incorporating elements of the lighthouse and the city of Newcastle into her art. She has been experimenting with different mediums, including acrylics and cups, and has been finding inspiration in the way the light reflects off the surface of the water. “For me, the cup is a symbol of daily life,” she says. “I like to think that it represents the simplicity and beauty of the everyday moment. When I paint, I like to stir my coffee and let my thoughts flow. It’s a way for me to meditate and come to myself.”

“It’s a very small country, 5 million people, so you can travel quickly, and it has beautiful mountains as well and has four seasons. Slovakia is a country of fairy tales for me. It has the most ruins and castles per capita,” she says.
