Buddhist Meditation is a method for gaining insight and knowledge in the world around us. Buddhist meditation is used by Buddhists to develop their minds. Buddhist meditation can be practiced by anyone, including non-Buddhists. There are countless variations of Buddhist meditation practices available.

The earliest written record of Buddhist meditation is the Anupada Sutta, which dates back to circa 500 BCE. This text identifies four types of meditative states: momentary concentration (khanikasamadhi), access concentration (upacara samadhi), absorption concentration (appanasamadhi), and equanimous concentration (upekkhasamadhi).

Tibetan Buddhism employs two primary forms of meditation: analytical meditation and devotional meditation.

Analytical or discursive meditation emphasizes the examination of concepts in order to gain spiritual insight. The Tibetan word for this form of meditation is gom, which means “to become familiar with.” It is also known as the “approach” or “application” stage.

In contrast, devotional (or mind) meditation emphasizes devotion to a deity or another aspect of spirituality in order to gain spiritual insight. The Tibetan word for this form of meditation is gompa or “to contemplate.”

When it comes to meditation, there are two important factors to consider: attitude and approach.

If you want to meditate but you don’t know how, or if you think you’re too busy to meditate, I can help.

Here’s a list of some of the most common reasons people give me for not practicing meditation: “I’m too busy,” “I don’t have time,” “I’m not good at it,” “It makes me sleepy.” The funny thing is that these are all excuses that I used at one time or another when I was first learning how to meditate.

The truth is that meditation is a skill that anyone can learn – just like riding a bike or typing. These days I could probably teach my cat to ride a bike, but when I was kid, she would have been one of the kids who thought it was impossible – too hard or something. Meditating is just like that — you have to practice for awhile before it starts become easier and more natural.
