As we get closer to Christmas and the time for engagement rings draws near, I thought I would discuss some aspects of diamond engraving that are often overlooked by both jewelers and purchasers alike.
Diamonds can be engraved in many different ways. The most common is laser etching where the stone is coated with a dark dye which absorbs laser energy better than the surrounding facets. The laser then burns off the dye leaving behind a black line about 1 micron wide. It is also possible to engrave diamonds using traditional mechanical methods such as acid etching or sand blasting however it is much more difficult to maintain control over this process due to the softness of diamonds compared to other stones such as sapphires and rubies.

The art of diamond engraving is a time-honored tradition. The art of diamond engraving is a time-honored tradition that dates back many years. Diamond engraving was first mentioned in the 1500s, when it was called “scrivening” and was used for decorating armor and sword handles.
In the mid-18th century, diamond engravers began to use a metal tool called a burin to incise designs onto flat stones. Today, diamond engravers use the same tools they have always used. The tools consist of basic metalworking tools such as gravers, burins, and saws.
The work itself is done on a lapidary machine. A lapidary machine can be any number of things: a drill press or rotary tool or hand-held grinding tool. The most important thing about a lapidary machine is that it has lots of different bits with which to work stone. Each bit performs a different task, from cutting and grinding to shaping, carving, sanding and polishing gemstones.
Since 1996, I have been engraving the faces of a number of classic and modern Rolex watches. Working on such a small scale, with a sharp instrument, has provided me with great challenges. I have had to invent new methods for holding and moving the work, and for dealing with the minuscule amount of space available to “etch” on the watch face.
