19th Century Art

Romanticism

Romanticism was a reaction to the emphasis on reason and order of the Enlightenment. Using emotion as the source of artistic inspiration, Romantic art tended to exaggerate movement and expression. Romantic artists preferred subjects such as history, mythology, and literature. Romanticism

Realism

Realists were concerned with accurately representing what they saw in the world around them using traditional media such as oil paint and sculpting clay. Realist artists include Gustave Courbet in France and Jean-Francois Millet in Belgium. Realism

Impressionism

Impressionists attempted to create a painting’s visual impact by recording the different sensations that colors, light, and shadows create on human observers rather than by attempting to imitate reality directly.

The 20th century saw many new art movements and styles come about. The article below discusses the most influential artists, both for better or for worse, and some of their most famous works.

The first half of the 20th century saw a variety of styles, including Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, Surrealism, and Constructivism. These styles were vital to shaping what was to come later in the century.

The second half of the 20th century brought about abstract expressionism, pop art, minimalism and conceptual art. There was a greater emphasis on abstraction in these styles than there had been in earlier movements.

Abstract expressionism is an important part of twentieth-century American art that is often characterized by large areas of color and simple forms. Jackson Pollock is one of the best known artists associated with this movement. He grew up around art and developed his own style early on. He was trained in other styles but he eventually developed his own “drip” technique which entailed pouring paint onto canvases laid on the floor.

Pop art is a style that emerged in the mid 1950’s and remained popular through the 1960’s until new movements such as Op and Minimal took over.

Minimalist art

The 20th century was a time of huge change in the field of art. As the century progressed, many new avant-garde art movements emerged and challenged traditional notions of art. Many artists began to reject conventional methods of creating art and instead used new technologies such as film, photography, performance art and installation art.

In this essay I will be looking at the most influential art movements from 1900 – 1999. I will be talking about the development of these movements, their ideologies and prominent artists.*

Art movements of the twentieth century have made a huge impact on the way art is seen. Modern art is a movement that has changed the definition of art itself. Before modern art, most ideas of what art was and how it should be were set in stone. There were certain ideals that artists had to follow. This all changed with the beginning of modern art, which was a drastic shift from traditional forms, and even abandoned a lot of the rules that had been set in place by the past generations of artists. The styles and concepts behind modern art were not always accepted by society, and it took some time for these new ways to emerge as popular.

Art movements throughout the twentieth century include:

* Cubism * Abstract Expressionism * Fauvism * Futurism * Surrealism * Art Deco  * Dada * Pop Art

Each movement became popular with its own style and ideals; whether it was based around color or form or emotion. As technology advanced, artists also started to use mediums such as photography and film as inspiration for their work. This article will look at each one of these movements and their contributions to modern art practices.

* Cubism:

Cubism was a major contributor to modern art. It began in 1907 by

Fauvism, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism were all art movements that started in the 20th century. They are examples of modern art which started in the early 1900s to 1960s.

Each movement had its own style but they were all related to one another. They broke away from the traditional forms of painting and sculpture and created a new way of looking at things.

Modern art is a major influence to many artists today because these movements began when they were still growing up and they have been inspired by it through out their lives.
