If you’re like most people, your closet space is a source of frustration. It’s not organized the way you’d like and it seems to have magical properties that make your things grow in number!

Somewhere, somehow, your clothes seem to find a way to pile up. But, see, this isn’t actually a problem with your closet. It’s a problem with your perception of it. Consider these 10 ideas for maximizing your closet space today:

1. Get rid of old stuff. You can’t fit new things in there if you’ve already got too much junk. And trust us, if you haven’t worn something in over a year, you’re not going to wear it again (and maybe the reason you haven’t worn it is because it doesn’t fit right anymore). So just get rid of all that stuff!

2. Clean out the clutter. If you really want to maximize use of your closet space, then you’ll need to clear out as much of the other non-clothing clutter as possible. Closet organizers are meant for clothing and accessories; they aren’t meant to store papers and junk and other random items that just happen to be hanging around the house. If you are like most people, the closets in your house are a mess. Closet clutter can be stressful and embarrassing, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There are plenty of ways to make more room in your closet with little effort.

The best way to get more closet space is to eliminate items you no longer need or use. Going through all of your clothes, shoes and accessories will take time, but it is the only way to really make more space. Don’t feel guilty about throwing away old things that you no longer wear; just remember that these items were taking up valuable closet space for nothing.

As you go through your clothes and shoes discard any that don’t fit or that you never wear. Don’t save them for “someday.” You may not be able to wear them ever again, so why not let someone else enjoy them?

Organize all of the remaining clothing into categories, such as shirts, pants and dresses. Keep like items together so that you can see how many of each type you have.

Put all of your shoes on racks or shelves so they’re easy to see and select from. Try storing larger items on the bottom shelf and smaller items on top shelves. This will give added storage space

The first step to take when organizing your closet is to take everything out of it, including both drawers and shelves. This may seem like a lot of work, but will actually only take a couple of hours.

Paint the walls of your closet white. This will make the space feel larger and give you a more spacious appearance. Paint the inside of your closet doors black. The contrast with the white wall will make your closet look larger as well.

This is all that is needed to get more closet space without having to spend any money or remodel your current closet!
