I have been a graduate student for the past four years now, and I have learned so much from my psychology courses. I still consider myself a psychology newbie, though, and my learning process is ongoing. I hope to share some of those lessons here with all of you.
I want to begin today, though, by sharing some of the study tips that I’ve learned along the way. These are not necessarily unique tips or secrets but rather some of the things that I have found to be most helpful in studying and preparing for exams.
There is a difference in studying between college and graduate school. In college, you study for the test. In Graduate School, you study to learn the material.**
The rules are simple:
1. Do not miss lectures
2. Go to office hours
3. Take notes
4. Study your notes**If you want to be successful in grad school you will have to get used to these four things immediately because it is what everyone does and if you do not do them you will be at a disadvantage compared to everyone else.**
What is the best way to study for a test? Many people believe that if you study for a long time before the test, you will be more likely to get a high score. What is the evidence for this belief?
To answer this question, let’s begin with something you already know. Suppose a student studies for 4 hours before a biology test and then scores 70% on the test. A student who does not study at all also scores 70% on the test. Would you say that studying for 4 hours helped the first student do better than if he had not studied?
This example suggests that studying for a long time before a test does not always help students do better on their tests. In fact, in many situations, it is better to study less before taking a test. This idea is counterintuitive because people can generally learn more by studying longer. So why would less studying be better?
Students should study less before taking a test only when: 1) They have already learned most of what they are going to learn from studying and 2) Studying has become counterproductive because it interferes with learning more by testing themselves on what they have already studied.
One of the things that I love about the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GS LIS) at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is that there are many events that are held here. We have movie nights, art exhibits, performances, book clubs, and more!
One of these events is the Art Science Museums Program. This program brings in speakers from all over the world to present talks on a range of topics such as meteorites, nanotechnology, and technology in the Middle East. The talks are always very interesting. Some of my favorite talks were by Dr. David Levin on micro-robots for surgical applications and by Dr. Al Biles on his work with digital libraries and museums.
The talks are held three times a year; fall quarter, winter quarter, and spring quarter. For each talk there is a reception which follows immediately after the talk where attendees can meet the speaker and ask questions. It is great to see so many graduate students from different departments join together to hear about topics we wouldn’t normally be exposed to!
There is never a charge for these talks! So please take some time out to learn something new or discuss a topic you are interested in with other graduate students.
The art museum can be one of the most interesting places to visit when you are in a new place. It is because they offer a variety of works of art, both from the local and from around the world. Aside from that, there are also old things that you can find in museums, which is very interesting for those who enjoy studying about history and culture.
Travelling with friends and families can be a good bonding activity and it will also help you appreciate their different perspectives about the arts. If you have kids with you, bring them along because there are special activities for children too. Museums are located in different cities, so if you travel a lot, this can be an activity that you can do every time you go to a new city. If you happen to stay in one place for a while, then this will be an interesting activity to do every day.
More than pictures or paintings, being able to see the real thing up close can make it more interesting. The museum tour will give you a chance to view these pieces up close and learn more about them. So, if you have time before or after your trip, make sure to check out the nearest museum so that your trip will become more worthwhile.
I admire your tenacity and dedication to learning. It is a very admirable quality, but please attempt to learn in a way that will get you the most information with the least effort.
First, realize that there are no shortcuts to learning. You cannot become an expert on any subject simply by watching a video or reading an article.
The best way to learn is to read books and articles written by experts in the field. Read about what you don’t know, and then try to apply this new knowledge to questions you do know how to answer.
Trying to apply your new knowledge at every step will slow you down, but it’s worth it because it forces you to remember what you have learned and helps you avoid jumping to conclusions and making errors.
Also, by trying to apply your new knowledge at every step, your are forced to ask better questions than if you were simply memorizing facts. And asking better questions can lead you down paths that faster learners might not explore as they are too busy memorizing facts.
Getting Started: The best way to get started is obviously by talking with experts already in the field. If you know people who have expertise in the subject matter of interest, ask them about what books or articles they would recommend for someone just getting

While you are at the art, museum look at every single work carefully. If possible stand in front of the painting or sculpture for a few minutes and try to observe everything present on it.
