The IKEA Art Event is a new initiative that will be held every year during Stockholm’s annual art festival. The first event will take place in the summer of 2021 and is planned to become an annual event that attracts new audiences and new visitors to the city.

Tentative plans are for the event to feature a number of participatory installations, with the theme ‘Furnishing Together’. The installations will be created by artists from around the world, who are invited to submit their ideas for what they would like to contribute to the IKEA Art Event. The submissions will then be assessed by a jury of experts who decide which ideas should be developed into fully realized installations. Once the winning installations have been selected, they will be produced by IKEA, shipped from its factories around the world and then installed in a public space in central Stockholm, where they will remain on display until removed at the end of August 2021. Each installation will stay up for about two months and be open to visitors 24 hours a day throughout that period, with guided tours available at regular times during opening hours.

The City of Stockholm is one of the most important platforms for art in the world, with an unmatched concentration of museums, galleries and other institutions. In addition, the city has a unique history and is also a cradle of innovation and new ideas. This combination makes it an ideal location for the Art Festival 2020.

The Art Festival will take place over ten days in May 2020 and will involve both public and private actors. The concept for the festival is based on five key elements: art, sound, light, time and place. These are all accessible to everyone in the city but can create unexpected connections between people, places and spaces that have not been previously joined together.

In order to reach as many people as possible during the festival, a wide range of artistic expressions will be deployed in public spaces across the city. As part of this process, Riksutställningar will take on a leading role as curator for this event. Riksutställningar will work closely with the City of Stockholm to develop a concept that links art and community engagement.”

IKEA is partnering with the Stockholm Art Festival and Stockholm Business Region to create a new series of public art installations. This collaboration will generate public artworks that reflect the values of our company, including accessible design, sustainability and inclusion. The first installation will open for IKEA customers and the general public in 2021 on the roof of IKEA’s first building in Sweden.

The artworks created by artists from around the world will be displayed in different parts of the store, providing customers with an inspiring experience every time they visit. The sculptures can also be viewed from outside the store and will be visible along traffic routes leading to IKEA.

Tapping into the creative energy and cultural vibrancy inherent in cities, IKEA aims to engage communities in expanded ways, including through workshops and local franchise business programs. The program has been developed based on extensive research by both Stockholm Art Festival and IKEA that identified how to make artworks intrinsic to an urban environment through partnerships with local organizations.

We have started to discuss the specifics of how to run ikea art event in Stockholm and we are very exited that it seems like everyone is on board with our visions. We will have more meetings this autumn and we will share more information as things progress.

The location of the event is the water front area by the Royal castle and the event will be a public art manifestation with many different art expressions included. We have already realised that it might be a good idea to hire some extra staff for this project so we can make sure that everything goes smooth and that all our participants get the best experience possible. So if you want to come over and lend a hand, we would love to hear from you.

We look forward to another exiting year with ikea art event!

The IKEA Art Event is a global art project that aims to encourage a wide audience to engage in art, and to participate in the creation of a large-scale exhibition that will be curated by a panel of international curators.

Tentatively scheduled for 2021, the IKEA Art Event will be held in Stockholm, Sweden. The exhibition will be co-hosted by IKEA and local partners including the city of Stockholm, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and The Cultural Endowment of Sweden.

The IKEA Art Event has two main components:

1) The public exhibition at MoMA, which will showcase works created by artists from around the world with support from IKEA and its customers; and

2) An open call to artists all over the world who want to get involved in this once-in-a-lifetime event.

To engage people worldwide and make this event truly international, we are inviting artists to submit proposals for their work using IKEA products. Artists can apply with ideas they have had or that they want to carry out using one or more IKEA products. The proposals should not exceed 150 words and should include a description of the project, a short bio and
