The materials needed for this painting are rather simple. A canvas (I am using a gessoed panel), a palette, brushes, some water in a cup for cleaning the brushes, and of course the subject matter itself.
The first step is to begin blocking in the painting with very light washes of paint – usually starting with the background color first. Early on it is important not to get too detailed since it may be necessary to go back and change things as we go along. The most difficult part of still life painting is getting objects “just right”. After completing the background and doing some initial work on the still life items, we then add another wash of paint over that area. This helps tie everything together and prepare us for the next step: fine detailing.
Still life is an art form that continues to be popular, because it appeals to a wide audience. The best still life paintings capture the beauty of everyday objects in a harmonious and beautiful way.
To get started with still life painting, you’ll need to find objects to paint. Look around the house for things you can use as subjects. Look in antiques stores or junk shops for items that can add color and interest to your paintings.
To capture the look of an object, use light and shadow carefully. Take some time to observe how light falls on the object, how shadows change its shape. Try different angles and positions to see what gives you the best view of the subject.
Large objects like apples and plates can lend scale to your painting. Place them in front of your table so they appear close up in the final painting, or move them away from the table so they look farther away, depending on the perspective you want to achieve.”
The still life painting is a genre of art that has been practiced since the 15th century. It involves the depiction of inanimate subject matter, usually commonplace objects. The practice of this type of painting was popular with the Flemish painters during the 17th century, where it was often paired with landscape painting to create a sense of realism. In this particular period, the still life paintings were intended to be seen as a representation of reality.
Still life paintings today are mostly created for their aesthetic appeal and are not meant to serve a function beyond that purpose. However, they are also considered to be an amateur form of painting due to their lack of realism and representational qualities. Most professional artists work on still life paintings as a stepping stone in developing their own unique style.
The term “still life” refers to an object that is not animate and has been arranged carefully by the artist to appear aesthetically pleasing when viewed from all angles. Most still life paintings depict simple everyday objects such as fruits, flowers, wine glasses and household items.
