A Visual Feast for Young Audiences

SPLAT! is set to make its mark at the Everyman Theatre on Saturday, May 24, bringing a visually stunning and interactive experience to young audiences aged three to seven. This unique show is designed to cater to a diverse range of audiences, including those who are deaf, non-English speaking, or still learning to communicate through words.

The Story Behind the Show

The production is centered around two artists, Tidy and Messy, who find themselves working together in an artist’s studio. This setup allows the audience to witness the evolution of art throughout history, from ancient cave paintings to modern masterpieces. Tidy and Messy represent the two hemispheres of the brain, with Tidy embodying logic and order, and Messy embodying creativity and spontaneity.

  • Clowning, movement, and slapstick comedy are used throughout the performance to engage the audience and create an immersive experience.
  • The stage transforms from pristine to colorful chaos, reflecting the dynamic relationship between the two artists.
  • The show explores themes of collaboration, play, and spontaneity, all through a visually striking performance.

A Wordless yet Powerful Experience

SPLAT! is a wordless performance, yet it packs a powerful punch. The show explores the history of various art movements, including the Renaissance, Surrealism, and more, through iconic images from renowned artists such as Van Gogh, Da Vinci, Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, and Banksy. Children will discover the beauty and diversity of art, all through a sensory-rich experience.

The Birth of a Production

SPLAT! was born out of the global conversations about children’s education that emerged during the 2020 pandemic. The production champions the belief that children need creative freedom, playfulness, and joyful exploration, alongside traditional curriculum-based education. The show was devised in collaboration with award-winning deaf artist, filmmaker, and performer Brian Duffy, who co-created the acclaimed sitcom Small World, the first sitcom in British Sign Language.

“We wanted to create a production that would challenge traditional notions of education and provide a platform for children to explore and express themselves in a creative and playful way.” – Deviser of SPLAT!
